From the Chief Executive Officer: |

Caregiving is something we learn by example. We are taught by our families and by others whom we admire and respect. My Grandmother, Louise was a caregiver by trade and by nature. She served as a practical nurse, caring for the children of wealthy families in Muncie Indiana. My Great grandmother, Lela, cared for my Mother, Barbara, while Louise was off working. Later in life Louise and her two sisters cared for Lela who died in her own home at the age of 94. In the mid 60's when my father died in a car accident, Louise moved to Michigan to take care of me and my pregnant mother and later, me and my sister while my Mother went back to work to support the family. Louise was still living with us when I went away to college. When my mother remarried, she and my step-dad cared for Louise, who suffered from Parkinson's disease and died at 84. My mother was in her 50's when Louise died. I turned 50 last year.
My step-father passed away in 2006. My brilliant, strong mother is 82. She comes to Orlando from Michigan every November and stays until April. She lives in the midst of my chaotic household filled with teenagers and pets. She goes out to dinner with me and my girlfriends, has a glass of wine every afternoon at 5 o'clock sharp and pretty much runs the place. She has had a few health problems but does really well except for her refusal to wear her hearing aids. She and I both know that one day she will move in with me full-time. And that is as it should be. Lela, Louise and Barbara taught me to be a caregiver, by example. Oh, by the way, did I mention that my daughter's name is Kiley?
