Life on the Creek! The Amazing American Eel
Ayers Creek along with other coastal waters from Greenland to Brazil are home to the amazing American Eel. Unlike many other migratory fish, the eel migrates in reverse. While most fish spawn in rivers and then migrate to the ocean to mature, the eel spawns in the ocean and migrates to coastal waters to mature. All American Eels spawn in The Sargasso Sea, a 2 million square mile warm water area in the Atlantic Ocean east of Bermuda.
The buoyant eel eggs float to the ocean surface and hatch into small transparent larvae. The larvae drift with ocean currents taking about a year to reach the Atlantic Coast. By the time they reach the coast, they have developed fins and the shape of adult eels and make their way back into the coastal streams and creeks where their parents once lived. Eels can cover their entire bodies with a mucous layer, making them nearly impossible to catch by hand. Perhaps you've heard the term, "slippery as an eel."
Eels are an important natural resource for the Coastal Bays. They provide a food source for rockfish, drum, trout, blue crabs, osprey, eagles and more. Eels also control populations of insects, worms, clams and frogs as well as clean coastal waters of dead animal matter. So, the next time you see an eel, don't say "YUCK", instead say "Thank you"!
