  • Department of Physical Therapy faculty attended and presented at the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting in New Orleans. Matthew Nuciforo, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS offered a research poster presentation, "Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty Following Failed Hemiarthroplasty: A Case Report." Donna Frownfelter, PT, DPT, MA, CCS, RRT, FCCP presented, "Patients with Congestive Heart Failure" and "Dealing with Patients with CVP in the Home Care Environment."
     
  • Jim Sturino, from the Department of Medicine, was selected as the March Staff Member of the Month. Read more about Jim here.
     
  • Jessica Minder, Scholl Class of 2014, was selected to present her summer research project at the 24th Annual Symposium on Advanced Wound Care.  Minder's project is entitled "Control of Lower Extremity Edema in Persons with Diabetes with Mild Compression Diabetic Socks: A Pilot Study."
     
  • Jared Simonson, DPT class of 2011, is working with the Lake County YMCA to offer its teens a workshop on athletic nutrition and injury prevention.
     
  • The research journal Virology recently published research by Lance Presser, a fourth-year PhD student, who suggests that Hepatitis C induces proteins that play a role in the development of liver fibrosis which can lead to cancer.
     
  • This year's All School Research Consortium (ASRC) included 114 presenters, 97 posters, 12 student speakers, one keynote and more than 30 judges. The winners were: (CHP) Jessica Wells, Audrey Leslie, Keri Omphroy; (CMS) Daniela Blau and Rachel Webel; (SCPM) Fraaz Sayeed; (SGPS) Gopal V. Velmurugan and Xiaoting Wang; (MD/PhD Travel Award) Nitika Paudel.
     
  • The College of Health Professionals will once again host the special exhibit, Through Our Hands: An Exploration into the Art and Science of Anatomic Pathology, April 8 through 22 at the Feet First Exhibition Hall.  For more information, please contact Kelly Reiss at Kelly.reiss@rosalindfranklin.edu
     
  • The 2011 Red Lantern Cultural Show hosted by the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA), featured a lion dance, martial arts, hip hop dancing, a fashion show, Korean percussion, singing and acting. This year's theme showcased the importance of cultural celebration and awareness.
     
  • The Fifth Annual CMS Student-Sponsored Faculty Teaching Awards was held on March 22. See the listing of faculty recipients here.
     
  • Team KOBE, one of 10 teams, advanced through four playoff rounds to win the RFUMS Intramural Basketball Championship against Team Prestige Worldwide

  • Nearly 900 children from elementary schools in North Chicago, Lake Zurich, Grayslake, Northbrook and Highland Park attended Lake Forest Symphony's production of Peter and the Wolf  on Feb. 24 at Rhoades Auditorium. WGN-TV anchor Robert H. Jordan, Jr., PhD, served as narrator and Symphony musical director Alan Heatherington conducted.
     
  • Lise Eliot, MD, was interviewed by the Wall Street Journal to discuss her research about brain development in boys and girls.
     
  • David Everly, PhD was quoted in the Lake County News-Sun regarding the efforts of the American Cancer Society.
  Alumni News
 
  • On Feb. 16, Chicago Medical School alumni who currently work at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, met at Spago's in Beverly Hills, California for a reception. More than 25 alumni and their spouses came together for a truly enjoyable event. The next Southern California CMS alumni gathering will be on July 16 for a barbecue.
     
  • On Feb. 26, alumni Clayton Berger, MD '84, and his wife, Randy, hosted a Rosalind Franklin University interprofessional alumni reception at their home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
     
  • Viracor-IBT Laboratories, a specialty diagnostics laboratory focused on immunology, infectious disease and allergy testing, recently named Paul Sohmer, MD '74, as its president and CEO. 
     
  • The life story of Thinh Huynh, MD '93 (GRD '89), was featured in the Craig Daily Press (Colorado). He was born in war-ridden Vietnam, escaped to Malaysia and after arriving in the United States, he pursued a medical education and military service. Click here to read his inspiring story. 
     
  • Loraine Diego, MD '97, a practicing pediatrician in Los Angeles, was profiled in the Asian Journal. 
  Advancement News

 

  • New Chicago Medical School Dean, Dr. Russell Robertson and his wife have instituted a Deans Challenge Fund for scholarship support for CMS students.  Dr. and Mrs. Robertson will contribute $1,000 a month to this fund.  The University is truly grateful for the Robertsons' commitment to scholarship support, as it assists in the university's efforts to ensure that scholarship funding is available to relieve the burden of student debt.  Faculty and staff of CMS who wish to contribute to the Deans Challenge Fund can contact the Institutional Advancement Office at extension 8340.  All additional gifts to the challenge will be treated anonymously, unless otherwise requested.
     
  • Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers, a Chicago-based, physical therapist-owned and operated rehabilitation company, is supporting Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science with a $100,000 sponsorship. The funds will be used to update the University's Gross Anatomy Laboratory technology, which is outfitted with workstations that include high-speed data, audio and video capabilities.
     
  • The Scholl College Alumni Association hosted its 28th Annual Scholarship Benefit on March 4 and through corporate and individual donations, it raised more than $60,000 for the Scholl Scholarship Fund. 
     
  • The University received a grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health to purchase an additional automated external defibrillator.
