Advancement News
  • We are pleased to announce that the Materials and Resources Sustainability Subcommittee at Rosalind Franklin University is the recipient of a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).  The focus of this program is on the so-called traditional recyclables including paper, plastics, glass, and metals.
The $51,913 grant from the DCEO focuses on enhancing the University's recycling program by purchasing additional indoor and outdoor recycling receptacles, with an emphasis on the on-campus student housing apartment complex.  Each individual student housing apartment has been provided one or two recycling bins which the resident(s) will use to collect their recyclables, thereby diverting them from the solid waste stream.  Once a week the residents will conveniently place their recycling bin(s) in the hallway just outside of their apartment entrance for the Facilities Management department to empty.  The recyclables collected will be placed in curb-side bins which will be emptied by the University's contracted waste hauler and transferred to a local recycling process center.  Additional recycling receptacles of various types will soon be placed throughout the University's main facilities in areas such as the Learning Resource Center, classrooms, study rooms, offices, and entrance ways.
In the near term, the University intends that this project will increase the amount of solid waste the University diverts from Illinois landfills by approximately 45 tons (18%), based on recent historical data.  This change will bring the University in line with the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) residential recycling average of 38%.  The University's long-term goal is to recycle a minimum of 50% of its traditional solid waste.
