Top The Nurtured Heart

Greetings!

Recently, Youth Homes has been implementing the teachings of The Nurtured Heart Approach. The technique focuses on helping kids feel great about themselves by celebrating their successes while shining the light on positive behavior. Trainings have been hosted for all employees and the approach is useful for parents, teachers, practitioners and caregivers as well as anyone who wants to encourage and promote positive behavior and change. Very often children in our care have learned that they receive the most attention through negative behavior.  At Youth Homes we are re-framing these beliefs in our youth.

Joel Rush has worked for Youth Homes in the Therapeutic Behavioral Services Department (better known as TBS) for three years coaching youth and comments how he uses this practice regularly.

Joel Rush

He explains TBS as "teaching youth behavior modification to help them be successful in school, home, community and life."  Before joining Youth Homes, Joel was working as a high school counselor and wanted the challenge and reward of working directly with youth in crisis. Joel believes that focusing on and rewarding positive behavior is re-enforcing the strengths in each child and building needed confidence.  He recalls a recent case while working with a 12 year old boy who had been through several placements.  He was struggling both in school and at home but after encouraging and coaching him how to communicate his needs and feelings in a non-aggressive way, this young boy has successfully stayed in his residential placement and is thriving in school.  Great job Joel!

Youth Homes would like to take a moment to acknowledge all the staff and their commitment to make a difference in the lives of the youth we serve. We could not do this without you!

Community Giving

Youth Homes was the recent recipient of four brand new Vita-Mix units.  The donation was in response to a request for the blending units to use in making healthy shakes for the youth in our care.

Above, residential supervisor of Andersen house Donna Heimbruch with employee Ashley Harmon were recent recipients of the units and received a demonstration by Youth Homes employee Leslie Harman. You might notice the green smoothie in Ashley's hand made with whole fruit and fresh spinach.  There's more than one way to get your kids to eat their greens!

Thanks Vita-Mix!

Dear friends,

As you can see, we are working hard to create a system of care that envelops each child in a thick ecosystem of positive influences.  This work is only possible because of our collaboration with our county partners, the Mt. Diablo School District and each and every one of you. Your support counts more than words can say.

Thank you,

 Stu Sig
