Greetings!
Do you have a passion to help youth? Are you a positive role model? Do you have a few extra hours a month to give to a youth? If you answered yes, then montoring may be right for you.
The Youth Homes Mentor Program was created to provide reliable adult connections for both residential and emancipated youth helping them learn the skills necessary to live a fully functioning adult life.
The objective of the program is to provide Youth Homes residents with healthy, successful, adult role models. This creates opportunities for residents to learn about the importance of education, work and healthy family relationships in shaping their own future. It provides residents with another caring, listening adult in addition to the resources provided by Youth Homes staff. It also provide residents with other opportunities for recreation and growth such as game nights, going to the movies or out for ice cream, cooking a meal together, or simply going on a walk.
Youth Homes give kids what "regular" kids take for granted: going to a ballgame, to dinner with someone who cares...help with schoolwork...someone to listen. As a mentor, you can help give them the childhood and transition into adulthood that they deserve.
To find out more about becoming a mentor contact Sheri Mascorro at sherim@youthhomes.org or call (925) 323-3410. |

Youth Homes Success Story
Be'era remembers a time not too long ago when she felt angry almost all of the time. When B (as her friends call her) first came to the Youth Homes family she was acting out and had a difficult time listening to the counselors direction. I suppose you might understand this if you knew that at 12 ½ B was removed from her family because of her mother's struggle with addiction, or that her father was unable to be present in her life due to numerous incarcerations. B felt very close to her older sister but was separated from this relationship as well when her sister ran away due to the pressures at home. She felt lost and alone, abandoned by all those she loved the most. Then she came to live at Youth Homes. It took some time for her to trust and heal before she began to open her heart to our counselors.
Today, B has grown to love her Youth Homes family, has a restored relationship with her sister and two little twin nieces that she adores.
Pictured above with Executive Director Stuart McCullough, Be'era is now 19 years old. She is living on her own in transitional housing, working toward getting her GED, and was recently hired to participate (as a paid employee) in the Youth Homes TAY (Transition Age Youth) Labor Program.
We think that is pretty great and congratulate B
on all of her accomplishments! |
