The face of despair

We were all in tears - Esther, me and their human.

Our long-overdue bills prevented us from taking them with us.

Face of despair

Pup, Pup and Pup trying to avoid the poop piles.

That's the way it's been lately. We receive so many calls every day about dogs and puppies needing rescue. Dogs we cannot admit because we are so badly in debt.

Boring, financial details: The usual expenses keep right on mounting in spite of limiting intakes. We just had three in for Heartworm treatment, the usual spay and neuters, medical issues and basic vetting. We buy our own wormer, vaccinations, etc, to save money. But it costs money to save money. We are even having to pay boarding because we don't have enough fosters. We had 80 dogs and puppies at one time last month - ALL COSTING MONEY!  Our current bill at just one of our vets is $5006.00. Thanks to your generosity that's a whole lot better than $8,000.00!

The result is that the only dogs we can admit right now are babies, pregnant or nursing mothers and life-or-death cases. The photos below are three such critical-need dogs who would have died if we hadn't admitted them, and a perfect example of our slogan in action.

"What we do - rescue, rehabilitate, relocate."

Before and after Cash, MooMoo, Barley
Yes, when we admit a dog, we are making a lifetime commitment to treat whatever
is the matter and care for him as long as he is with us.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE OTHERS?  The helpless dogs still at large?  Like Pup, Pup, Pup and their sister Brownie ankle deep in poop. The emaciated Bradley living in the woods?  You're wondering, do we forget them?  Never.  How could we? They keep us awake or haunt our dreams.  (If you're that one person who sends an irate email demanding we should be ashamed for not admitting the Pups, DON'T. Instead, click the donate button or rearrange your yard to take a foster or hold a bake sale or cross post to rescues. Nothing you can say will make us feel worse than we already do, but something you could do would help.)

Please know that we are doing everything we can to help them. We try to help by posting, facebooking, advising, referring, taking pictures, sharing food, supplies, dog houses, or begging like this. In other words we "assist". There are so many of these "dogs at large" that the work-load for helping them is just a formidable as it is for our admissions. And there is no other rescue nearby. We are their only hope. When we have to say, "We will try to help you, but we can't actually take the dog for lack of funds and space . . . . well, we might as well have said "No".

More information about this Assist: These people are disabled. He is in critical health and cannot tend the dogs at all. She is frail and gets knocked down if she goes in the pen. They cant let them run free because one neighbor shoots dogs, another puts out antifreeze.

Brownie is the sweet, 9-month-old sister. The boys were too rough for her, so she was let out. As part of our outreach/assist efforts, we found a sponsor to get her spayed. That has been done and she is in temporary protective custody, where she cannot stay. We are trying to round up one of our kennels that are out on loan, to extend the space. That will help a little.

Rescues needed for as-is direct pull of our area's at-large dogs:

If you're a rescue and want to pull directly from the trenches, that would be huge. There are many other dogs and pups in the surrounding four counties who need to be gotten out if you're no-kill. Most have not been vetted or tested. These Pups are beautiful 9-month-old Golden Retriever mixes. We can help with transport.

Volunteer position:  "Emergency Response Coordinator" needed to manage and coordinate the "Assist" program.  Will handle the calls, the follow ups and supervise the tiny staff of two volunteers. Need not be local. Must have rescue and computer experience, free time, and be committed, serious and reliable. Not for the wishy washy. Call me, Susan, at 334-695-0659 or 229-334-2148. I cannot get messages, just call back or email me at [email protected].

Late Breaking Alert:  We just received another emergency call .  Eufaula, AL; Near Fox Ridge & Country Club Roads at 11:07 PM.  A little Sheltie-looking dog was hit by a car and lying injured in a brush pile. When volunteers tried to approach, the dog hobbled away and hid in the dark woods.  He or she had an injured leg and was obviously in pain and afraid.  We searched in the woods, but no luck.  We plan to go back in the morning.  Please share with residents of that area.  If an owner (sorry) comes forward, we can show you where last seen.  Please pray for this little dog.
