"Allie"

  She can't run anymore.

When we found her, Allie couldn't move.  She wasn't able to run from us anymore.  She was in too much pain and just bone tired. Her front leg was a mess.  There were wounds on her face, body and rear legs too.  Her paws were swollen.  The pad on one of her paws was so calloused and hard, it was separating from her foot and starting to come off.

But that front leg is the worst.  We don't have a diagnosis yet, but they said it could be a break or nerve damage.  OMG, nerve damage could mean amputation.

Allie's Story

Allie's puppies in June
Allie watched us round up her puppies house this summer.

We first saw her this Summer when we responded to a call about some puppies in danger.  We drove way out Gammage Road just past the third bridge.  The abandoned house backed up to one of Lake Eufaula's creeks, deep in the back woods where alligators lurk.  The owners abandoned their dogs along with all their junk.

Thomas, a local resident, told us the dogs live there, but they run the roads looking for food.  The mother dog stood back watching while we got her puppies.  She seemed friendly until we tried to get closer to her.  Then she would limp away. She was a wreched, scrawny wreck of a dog, with ugly sores all over.  Thomas told us she had escaped from an encounter with an alligator. (That's why we call her Allie). She badly needed rescue, but would not cooperate.

Members of our rescue team tracked her and fed her for months. She especially liked Aprille.  But whenever Aprille thought about getting her, she would not show up.  We finally set a trap, which she avoided.

 Allie waiting for us

Aprille called to tell me Allie had been injured again. She had wounds all over and couldn't use her front leg. We went out there to reset the trap, determined to get her.  It was cold and raining.  We looked in all the places Aprille said she goes.  Then Aprille spotted her under a pole barn!  She just looked up at us.  She was shivering and looked so tired.

We put a blanket around her and she let us pet her.  We offered her some chicken, but she didnt want it. It was a long way to carry her back to the truck, and we were afraid she would panic and hurt herself trying to run away again.  We needed help.

Another team member, David, came to the rescue.  Allie offered no resistance.  She even seemed relieved, almost as if she knew help was there.

Putting Allie into dog box

Allie was transferred from the truck to a car and rushed to the vet. She was admitted right away and seemed glad to be there. I think she knew.

Allie is getting to rest and eat without walking the highway for miles to find food.  The vet staff says she's a very nice dog.  Maybe we'll learn what's wrong with her leg on Monday.

Our vet bills are huge; over $9,000 now.

But Allie needs help no matter how much we owe.
