They brought him to our door late at night, saying, "He's dying! Please help him!" He was barely breathing, severely emaciated, cold, unable to stand or raise his head. His fur was so matted and pulled so tight they made dozens of sores all over his tiny body. We named him Christian because he was found at a church where he was dumped and had been seen off and on for days . . . and because we were praying so hard.

Christian's Rescue: A good sameraton first saw him on the church steps and fed him and cut out some of the matts, then had to leave. She made the call asking help for this little toy poodle in terrible shape. A search was begun by rescue friends who run a local spay/neuter clinic. Jo couldn't find him after hours of searching. By the time he was finally found, days later, he was near death. Jo and Aprille brought him to us, knowing we keep some supplies on hand. And a long night began. We administered subcutaneous fluids, put him on a heating pad and covered him to try to reduce effects of shock. We tried unsuccessfully to call a vet. We didnt really know what else to do, so we prayed and Googled the medications we had on hand. (Some triage team!) We cut out the worst of the matts that were pulling his skin tight, and were encouraged when he yelped once and looked up. But we thought he stopped breathing several times, so we kept a hand on his chest to feel signs of life. He finally regained consciousness again but was very weak. We tried to hold him up so we could examine him. Something was very wrong with his rear end. His back legs just folded. We didnt know if it was a broken leg or hip. We continued giving the sub-Q fluids off and on for hours. We had done what we could until morning so everyone left and I went to sleep. I woke up to find him trying to stand!!! He ate some canned food and drank water. He was going to make it!
Veterinary Exam: When we got there, they took him back immediately. After the exam and x-rays Dr Todd said his hip is broken (Bilateral midshaft ileal fractures). He was starving, dehydrated, Heartworm positive, full of parasites, anemic, and had loose and filthy teeth, though he's only a year and a half old. His Blood count was low and he was in a lot of pain. Christian's skin was scabby and infected from the sores where he was so matted. They shaved him, but there were so many sores they couldn't do a smooth job. He was given fluids, iv's, put on heat, pain meds and antibiotics.

Update: Several days later, Christian is still weak, but improving. He is responsive and has a good appetite. His blood count is up, Dr Todd believes his hip will heal on it's own. But if he does have to have surgery it would cost as much as $3,000. He has been neutered and started Heartworm treatment. His rehabilitation will include 6 weeks of strict cage rest for both the Heartworm and his fractured hip.
On the personal side, Christian has not gone potty in his cage. He waits to be carried outside. Good boy! He is allowing touch now, accepting affection and fine with being carried in and out. The vet techs are all in love with him. We hit the jackpot getting him a wonderful foster home. Hopefully he can be discharged this Friday.
Christian's bill is between $650 and $800 already. Please help us help him by donating.

(Note: We are a donar-supported 501c3 charity. All donated moneys are used for the care of the dogs. On the rare occasion one dog receives more than the amount of his or her bill, the overage is applied for some of our other dogs who get no donations whatsoever.)
