BIOS Protection with TPM
In recent years, attacks on PC BIOS have increased in frequency and sophistication. Successful BIOS attacks can render a PC completely unusable or infiltrate it with almost undetectable malware. Fortunately, TPM offers valuable protection against such attacks. Two recent publications from the U.S. National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) describe BIOS attacks and appropriate countermeasures, including the use of TPM and TNC technologies. For more details, review the publications: NIST SP 800-147 and NIST SP 800-155.

Cool Technology But How Can I Use It?

Customers are often impressed with TCG technologies but struggle to apply them in a real-world setting. Now TCG has started a series of Architect's Guides, which explain how to use TCG technologies to solve today's most pressing IT security problems. The Architect's Guides give practical advice for using Trusted Computing today, while pointing the way to future possibilities still to come. Case studies give real examples, complemented by vendor-neutral architecture diagrams. Benefits and challenges are listed. To view the latest Architect's Guides, go here. To help create a new one, contact TCG Admin.

Aberdeen Group Research Identifies Security, Compliance and End-User Benefits in Trusted Computing Deployments
The IT industry research firm Aberdeen Group has documented a significant savings per endpoint in enterprises deploying a hardware root of trust, including the Trusted Platform Module.

In its report, "Endpoint Security: Hardware Roots of Trust" published this month, Aberdeen Group determined an average cost advantage of US $82 per endpoint for organizations using hardware roots of trust. The cost advantages came from reduction in security incidents, reduction of audit /compliance deficiencies, and lower total cost of ownership.

Those organizations using a hardware root of trust had 50 percent fewer security-related incidents and spent 21 percent less - about $15 per endpoint annually - in total operational costs, including all related people, process and technologies. Access the full report until August 3 here. The full report also will be available on the TCG website after August 3, so watch for it there!
