Hardening Private Keys with Less Hassle, Less Cost and More Security: A Case Study in Authentication

cloud security

In September 2011, Trusted Computing Group hosted an InformationWeek webcast titled: "Hardening Private Keys with Less Hassle, Less Cost and More Security: A Case Study in Authentication". PwC walked attendees through its highly analytical and metrics-driven decision process to not only deploy effective multi-factor authentication but to use the TPM as part of that strategy. TCG member Softex, Inc. offered a case study in which costs for password support were reduced 98 percent after the bank, with some 8,000 employees around the country, deployed the TPM combined with biometrics for its multi-factor authentication strategy.

Self-Encrypting Drive Market and Technology Report

The TCG hosted a webcast featuring Dr. Thomas Coughlin, Coughlin Associates, on October 5, 2011, to preview new research on self-encrypting drive adoption and forecast. This is the first time any such research has been conducted, and some detailed data on SEDs and their adoption was collected. Several hundred people attended this live event and during the webcast, some interesting questions were posed. In the attached, we try to answer those questions. If you have questions and don't see what you need here, please check out a new white paper on self-encrypting drives.

Updated TCG Demo Space in Tokyo

The TCG demo space in Tokyo has recently updated its facilities to accommodate the following new TCG technologies:

  • TCG Technology using TPM
  • TCG Technology using TNC
  • TCG Technology using OPAL

The demo space was initially constructed by Japan Regional Forum (JRF) as part of the JRF activities back in June 2009 and has since been accepting visitors for TCG technology education.

If you are interested in visiting the demo space please download the request form (Japanese) and submit to TCG administration (Japan contact).

Event Recap: NSA Trusted Computing Conference 2011

The event received 622 attendees, comprised of 30 percent from government, one percent from academia and the remaining percentage of attendees from the IT vendor community.. Attendees this year seemed to be more knowledgeable and aware of trusted computing. Sixty percent of the abstracts received were accepted and it was noted that it did not go unnoticed that the TCG was not granted a keynote speaking opportunity at this event. The TCG had a 20 x 30 booth space at this year's NSA TCCE 2011 and offered members the opportunity to showcase their implementations of TCG technology into their products. We had 14 companies represented in 10 pods within the booth. These included: Absolute Software, Byres Security, Fritz Technologies, Great Bay Software, Hitachi GST, Infoblox, Juniper Networks, Lumeta, Microsoft, NCP Engineering, Samsung, Sypris Electronics, Wave Systems Corp., and WinMagic. The following member companies had their own presence on the tradeshow floor: Absolute Software, Dell, Digital Management, Inc., Freescale Semiconductor, General Dynamics, Great Bay Software, Infineon, Infoblox, NetAPP, Oracle, Wave Systems Corp.

It is Time for Trusted Computing

In this era of budget austerity, telework is an effective way to reduce agency costs and increase productivity. It's also important to enable "social distancing," which is recommended in the event of a pandemic such as H1N1. Recognizing these benefits-and in response to statutory and policy mandates-federal agencies have implemented telework policies and an increasing number of employees are taking advantage of the option. At the same time, however, teleworking presents significant security challenges...Read more

Trusted Computing Group Announces Trusted Virtualized Platform Architecture

..."The new TCG Virtualized Trusted Platform Architecture Specification defines how a virtual TPM will behave and how it can be used with a physical TPM to allow remote parties to evaluate the level of trust offered by the overall platform (VM and its underlying VMM). The specification defines terminology, component features, and the virtualization layering design blueprint to ensure a common approach, as well as security requirements and implementation considerations for a TCG-compatible trusted platform.  However, it does not specify how virtual or physical machines are specifically implemented by vendors"...read more
