Founders' Message

Dear  ,

It is black and white - your business should embrace gray!

There are 78 million Baby Boomers in the U.S. born between 1946 and 1964 and they are brewing up a "Silver Tsunami". Already they are driving trends to meet their needs. Here's why:
  • Boomers are buying 60% of healthcare.
  • They control 70% of the total net worth in the U.S.
  • They will spend an average of $7 billion online this year.
  • 41% will move upon retirement.
  • 1 in 7 are providing care to a parent or other family member.
It's not just the Boomers that are driving demand from the mature market. People 85 years old and over - "the oldest old" - are the fastest growing part of the elderly population. Since 1940, this segment has grown in excess of 50% each decade (U.S. Census Bureau).

The bad news about these numbers is that our country is not prepared to meet the needs of the growing aging population. Just take a look at the World Alzheimer Report 2010.

The good news is that you have a tremendous opportunity to do well by doing good, offering services that improve lives and your bottom line. Lifelines Academy is here to show you how.

We currently have 25 online courses teaching unique services like organizing health information and designing living spaces for seniors. Coming soon are courses in Senior Move Management, Geriatric Care Management, Home Healthcare and Physical/Occupational Therapy. We contribute our legal and business backgrounds and join with subject matter experts to bring you both knowledge and know-how.

Are you ready to turn gray into green?

Sincerely,

Sheryl Hunter, CEO

World Alzheimer's Day was observed September 21, 2010. The World Alzheimer Report 2010 provides staggering facts and projections. It states, "Worldwide, the costs of dementia are set to soar" and estimates an "85% increase in costs to 2030." The most important point is that "there is an urgent need to develop cost-effective packages of medical and social care that meet the needs of people with dementia and their caregivers across the course of the illness." We can only hope this wake up call will be heard.

National and International Trends: A Global Perspective on Inclusive Design

Kim Albritton
Kim Albritton
Interior Designer; Certified Aging in Place Specialist; Certified Charrette Planner

Live: Oct. 20, 2010, 1:00-2:15 p.m. EST

Travel around the world through the eyes of an interior designer who is passionate about inclusive design and see how cultural differences and attitudes toward aging directly impact the design of spaces, products and whole communities.

Participants can expect to learn:
  • Why so many terms are used to describe "inclusive design"
  • Continental divides on color, size, shape and degrees of convenience and comfort in design
  • How culture and attitudes about the elderly have the power to propel or inhibit policy that would enforce widespread use of inclusive principles
  • Moving beyond the residential built environment, what are the components of an inclusive community? Who are the players in such an undertaking, and what resources are available for further study on the subject?
