Happy New Year Everyone!
This Winter Wonderland photo was taken the morning after a white Christmas in NC. It was absolutely beautiful. There were reports of flurries here on Kiawah and Seabrook on Christmas, but there was no accumulation. Palm trees covered with snow is a very strange sight.

2011 arrived in a flash, didn't it? Do you remember when our parents warned us not to be so impatient wanting to be the next magical age of "16", "18", and then "21"? They told us that we would discover that the older we get, the faster the years fly by! Oh, so true! So here we are, beginning a new year once again.

It has been extremely busy at It's A Stitch. We have seen so many familiar faces, and so many more for the first time recently! The week after Christmas kept us on our feet, literally, all day, every day. The colder weather made some people want to knit and others want to chose new needlepoint projects.

Thank you all for making 2010 a great year for us. We hope you'll drop by soon.

Linda, Margot, Jean, Pat, Lee and Joan

What's New in Needlepoint?

Pischke pocket - Charleston
New from Pischke Pockets

The Charleston Bag!

Pischke Pockets have been best sellers. The bag pictured above is a brand new design honoring Charleston and we have some in stock! It comes as a complete kit ($195), including the striking striped carpet bag, hand-painted canvas, thread, and finishing instructions so that you can complete the project yourself. Many of our customers have asked It's A Stitch to send their stitched projects to our professional finisher to have their canvases attached to their bags, and to have lining and interior pockets constructed to their specifications.

What's New in Yarn?

"Crofter" is a brand new yarn from Sirdar and it is amazing! Look how it knits:

Sirdar Crofter yarn
Crofter is a snuggly Baby Fair Isle Effect DK Yarn
55% nylon and 45% acrylic

It looks like you are really working hard to get this effect, but it's easy! Just let the yarn do the work! It feels wonderful too!

Kudos to Karen Davis

What a labor of love these two canvases were! Karen's first Canvas Embellishment class with Tony Minieri was quite an experience. She began several years ago, and despite taking more classes with new canvases, Karen worked hard to complete these two stunning shell pillows for her newly decorated living room. Each shell has character and depth. Great job Karen!

Margot's Kelly Clark Christmas Ornament

Margot's ornament

Our finisher can do surprising things with simple pieces like this round ornament. It is three dimensional with rouched fabric, two-toned custom cording around the edges, and onn top, there are holly sprigs, gold balls and greed-edged red ribbon.

Linda's  Labors of Love Owl

Each year, Linda makes one ornament for each of her sons, daughter-in-law, grandson, and for her tree. She has "borrowed" this one back from one of her sons to display in the shop.

The original thread junkies: It's A Stitch offers all you need for needle work and knitting

Although it's located not too far away from the Maybank/Main intersection on Maybank Highway, It's A Stitch is a little hard to find for first time visitors.

"We tell them to look for the smile," said co-owner Linda Juchatz, referring to the "Smile" dentist sign which tops the list of shop names displayed in front of their small shopping center.

Taking up most of the back section of the L-shaped complex, It's A Stitch has been in its current location for almost four years, and in existence for more than eight years.

"We decided to open a shop because the only needlework shop in the area was closing, and they were the only ones that would order our supplies," said co-owner Margot Anderson, "and we needed a brick and mortar store to get them."

Linda and Margot had several objectives in opening the store besides access to much-needed supplies, however. They also wanted to provide customers with access to nationally-renowned teachers, as well as their own skills. Both shop owners have a broad spectrum of experience, with Margot specializing in English gold work and Japanese embroidery, and Linda showing an amazing talent for ribbon embroidery and needlepoint finishing. In fact, one of her finished pieces featuring an elegant mermaid with such amazing ribbon work, it takes a moment to really see every intricate detail.

It's A Stitch began as a needlepoint-only store, but soon after they opened, customers began asking about knitting supplies, as well. Today, the shop is a treat for anyone interested in the threaded arts. Divided into two distinct sections, the left-hand side of the shop features all things having to do with needlework, while the right-hand side spills over with hundreds of balls of yarn composed of every type of fiber imaginable - from wool and cotton to fine mohair and delicately soft angora. "We're thread junkies," smiled Margot.

Classes are available at It's A Stitch on a by-request basis, with one-on-one sessions offered at $15 for a full half-hour session. Groups are more than welcome to come by, and can either book a teaching session or just come in and use the round table in the needlepoint room for group work. Linda and Margot do ask that you call ahead if you're bringing a large group, and welcome the like-minded company. Upcoming events include a unique knot garden session with internationally acclaimed needlepoint master, Tony Minieri. The February class has already been sold out, but Linda and Margot plan to offer a follow-up class when the pattern becomes available in fall of next year. The pattern is unique, made specifically by Minieri for this class, and features a three dimensional Charleston garden with five of the most well-known flowers of the Lowcountry worked into the design.

It's A Stitch is located at 3464 Maybank Hwy, Johns Island. For more information, call 557-0401.

Karen Hennessey
www.zecca.net

Zecca is an Italian word meaning "a place to mint coins". Karen's "coins" are really her creations made from polymer clay, where she combines color and jewelry and beads to create unique buttons, laying tools, magnets, vial tops and many other things. Her inspiration comes from several sources: leaves and petals, textiles and patterns and colors she finds appealing. Her colorful, playful designs on needlepoint canvases are such fun to stitch. Visit her web site to view all her current designs. We have included just a few of her designs we currently have in stock. We have other belt and purse canvases ~ even a clock canvas!

We'd like to introduce you to an interesting web site from The National Needle Arts Association (otherwise known as TNNA - our trade association). The site can be found at www.worldofneedlepoint.com It is "a one stop source for everything you want to know and see about needlepoint", including the long history of the art. One particular quote is very interesting, "Western culture tends to link needlework to women, but it was originally performed by men who spent years mastering their craft". We have several very interesting men who are customers of ours who have proven to be very precise and beautiful stitchers, including (thank goodness!) surgeons, retired CEO, retired colonels, etc.
