Camp Reed Auction
You are all invited to this month's Camp Reed Auction! All funds raised from the Auction provide scholarships for deserving low income children in our community, and help make facility improvements as well as support program opportunities for campers. Amazing sponsor, donor and attendee support has allowed Camp Reed to continue to thrive!
Heritage Club Dinnner

On Nov. 1st at Northern Quest, we will host a dinner to honor all Heritage Club members.

The Heritage Club is comprised of men and women who support the mission of the YMCA of the Inland Northwest through gifts to the endowment fund using a variety of methods (outright gift, bequest in will, and charitable gift annuity just to name a few). The goal of the Y's endowment effort is to create a permanent fund of sufficient size to produce 10% of the Association's annual program requirements. In supporting this effort, many Y friends will help assure a strong, viable Y for the youth of future generations.

Contact Steve Tammaro if you are interested in joining the Heritage Club at (509) 777-9622 or at stammaro@ymcaspokane.org

Important Facility Notices

Here's an update on the upcoming renovation and replacement projects that will be occurring at our Spokane Valley and North Spokane YMCA's:

Spokane Valley YMCA

  • The Women's Locker Room has been delayed due to a late arrival of the lockers, and is set to be returned to the women on October 6
  • Oct 6-28: Men's Locker Room Closed for renovation

The Project as a whole is on time and is set to be finished on October 28!

North Spokane YMCA

Bonneville Power will be replacing two wooden power poles located in the middle of the current parking lot. During this replacement, no one will be able to come within 100 ft. of the poles or lines, which blocks access to the entire parking lot.

Unfortunately, we will have little control of when this shutdown will occur.  Bonneville Power will give us 5-7 days notice before the closure, and hopes to keep the disruption limited to just 48 hours. The temporary closure will take place some time between late October and late November. Keep an eye on Facebook and Twitter in order to stay updated on all facility notices!

Save the Date! Youth Investment Auction

We would like to invite you all to save the date for our annual Youth Investment Banquet & Silent Auction on Tuesday, November 13 at the Lincoln Center. This event will help to raise much needed financial support and community awareness for the Youth Investment Program.

If you would like to attend, click here for more information.

This program intervenes and invests in the lives of at-risk teens. We provide support, guidance and the opportunity to fulfill required community service and restitution through a variety of job settings.

Teens are introduced to the values and principles that will help them succeed in an array of work environments, while also being shown the true value in themselves. Participants are encouraged in life goal-setting and enhancing their work skills by working closely with positive adult mentors in a productive environment.
Healthier Snacking
Snacks, like all foods, are fuel and should maintain our energy between meals and supply essential vitamins and minerals.  But if we choose "empty calories" or processed foods with little nutritional value, we don't benefit from that added energy or nutrition. Below are a few simple snacking tips for you and your family to try out!

Make fruits and vegetables convenient by placing them in spots where you'll see them first. Fill a large basket or bowl with fresh fruit and place it on the kitchen counter.

Have "grab and go snacks" in small plastic bags (cut up raw veggies, peeled and segmented oranges, seedless grapes, etc.) ready and waiting in your refrigerator.

Establish a schedule or regular timing of snacks to enjoy healthy food and to prevent
grazing between meals.

Their Story:   Carole and Jerry Williams
A recent photo taken at Carole and Jerry's wedding this past month.

Jerry joined the YMCA in July of 2009 at the urging of his Humana agent, Cheryl Olson.  Carole came to the Y through the SilverSneakers® program as a transfer from the Institute of Extended Learning class at the Sons of Norway.  "I was already enrolled in a water exercise class at the Y, and decided to combine the two forms of exercise at the same facility," Carole said.

Carole and Jerry met in the SilverSneakers® class in September of 2009.  "I took a fall during a jogging exercise in the gym and Jerry stopped to help me up.  That was not what impressed me so much, but the following exercise day, he came up and said, 'You took a nasty fall the other day...  I just wanted to be sure you are okay.'  I was fine, but I was touched by his kindness and taking the time to check."

"The YMCA is a great place for family connections.  During SilverSneakers®, we see children from the Childcare Center.  They come to watch the grandmas and grandpas doing their workouts.  A safe environment for these youngsters is critical to the parents who have to leave children during the day.  We have also had the opportunity to donate women's work-appropriate attire to the YWCA's program 'Our Sister's Closet' that helps women transition into the workplace."

"Over the years of our membership, we've both noticed an increase in the programs offered.  Offering health maintenance programs such as SilverSneakers® in cooperation with insurance plans to improve health and quality of life for seniors is a win-win for all concerned. We plan on continuing in the SilverSneakers program to maintain body fitness and to continue fellowship with our workout friends."

What started as a gentleman assisting Carole after tripping has grown past a friendship and has blossomed into a marriage. The YMCA extends our congratulations to Jerry and Carole on their wedding.

I'm Not Retired,
Just Re-Treaded:
Burke Horner

Do you remember all those old people who used to irritate you by driving their cars too slowly or by walking with their shopping carts right in the middle of the aisle? At the time, all you could think of was getting around them, right? You know the ones I mean... the ones who were always reminiscing about times you didn't know or care about?

Well, guess what. I looked in the mirror the other day, and I have become one of them! It is not that easy to boom like a baby boomer anymore. I thought it wouldn't happen to me. But here I am, and I have to make the best of it.

The idea of retirement, or in my case, selective reduction, was not supposed to be in my vocabulary. I figured I would probably retire in my eighties. I used to design restaurants and lived in southern California. At the time of my retirement, most of my friends were divorcing their wives or vise-versa, and marrying a spouse the square root of their age.

Perhaps they were attempting to recapture their youth? My problem was I didn't notice I was getting older. Age crept up on me without my awareness. What I did notice was the addition of aches and pains, gray hairs, and as I previously mentioned, thoughts of the past.

Since the average salary for the work you do after you retire is usually about one third of what you previously made, I have been attempting to re-invent myself, or stated in a more respectable way, to retread myself.
