News From the YMCA
Sunny days make us eager for Spring to arrive. While it will be a bit until we see the red robin bopping along outside, the Y has been hopping inside. Our members have been embracing Healthy Living by jumping on cardio machines, joining exercise classes and generally keeping the Y active and happening. While they have been happy and healthy tackling new resolutions or continuing healthy habits, the Y staff have been actively preparing to launch our annual Partners For Youth scholarship campaign embracing our Social Responsibility commitment to our community. Watch for a month of activity in the facilities and read on for more information about how Together, We Can Change Lives.
High Fives All Around

With the Y's Partners for Youth (PFY) Campaign fast

approaching, we want to invite everyone to 'Give the Y a High 5!' In the spirit of aiding a fellow neighbor, members can contribute in a big way by adding $5 to their monthly draft. After 10 months (Mar.-Dec.), your donation accumulates to $50 and helps deserving Spokane area families and individuals who lack the ability to pay for services.

The money we raise in 2012 helps support our scholarship fund to assist those who otherwise would be unable to experience the YMCA.

The Y is and will continue to be a thriving hub built to help families and individuals learn and grow all while strengthening important community ties. So, remember to 'Give the Y a High 5' and participate in our launch days Feb. 7th (North), 8th (Central), and 9th (Valley) where you can visit our booths to get involved and learn more.

Pedal For PFY

Lace up those sneakers, find that lucky headband, and get ready to pedal. The Y proudly introduces "Pedal for PFY," a 12-hour team relay beginning Monday, Feb. 20th at 10am to help raise money for Partners for Youth (PFY).

Participants will form teams of 5-10 friends who will pedal for as long as they...

Volunteer Spotlight

Judy is one of our dedicated corporate office volunteers. She received first-hand knowledge of the YMCA through her husband Clint, director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Judy has supported front desk activities at our corporate office for the last 3 months and now contributes 10 hours a week.

"From someone who has just started volunteering at the Y, I can only say, 'What took me so long?'" she said of her rewarding experience. "I just needed a push, and a ride to work!"

After retiring, Judy felt she could use her free time to accomplish many tasks at home. The feeling faded however, and she soon began missing the people at the Y who made her smile.

"I took off my slippers and boots, put on my work shoes and joined the Y office staff," she said. "I can only say thanks for this opportunity to be with great people with a great mission. Volunteering has given me purpose and continues to bring me joy."

Gabrielle's Story

Gabrielle came to the YMCA as a teen involved in the Juvenile Court system and was looking for a way to complete her community service. As most of our youth in the Youth Investment Program come to realize, she got that and so much more. Gabrielle's video testimony is just one example of how the Youth Investment Program offers renewed hope to teens who have little reason to believe in a positive future.
