With temperatures cooling down outside, it's heating up at the Y! Families are moving activities indoors and the Y has you covered. Whether you're looking to spend a Sunday afternoon splashing and paddling in any of our many pools, getting your sweat on in our Wellness Centers, hooping it up in a hoops class or on the court, or challenging your friends to a rousing game of ping pong or Clue in our Family Activity Centers, we'll keep you warm and toasty. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Hooping

Go Green LogoWho ever thought spinning and twirling a circular piece of PVC pipe around your body could make you healthier? The Y confidently introduces Hooping as an exercise with no shortage of exhilaration or excitement for its participants.

Weaving world dance and yoga into an effective low-impact class means this exercise can accommodate all levels of fitness. With an inspiring soundtrack of dance music serenading a relaxed, festive setting, you're sure to get a workout worth bragging about.

Stefani Sellers, a hooper extraordinaire of five years and instructor at the Y, found out early on that Hooping elicited radical changes in her mind, body, strength, and stamina. "The hoop as a meditative and self expressive tool, opened so many pathways of growth in my life, in fitness, and overall well being," she said.

Hooping is a free class for Y members. The North and Central Ys offer this class on Monday and Thursday evenings. Anyone interested can learn more at www.ymcaspokane.org or by checking the group exercise schedule for exact dates and times.

Journeys

Girl Scouts Partner With the Y

The Girl Scouts are bringing their Journeys program to the Valley YMCA. Girls in Sixth, Seventh and Eighth grades can participate. The six-week course provides enriching activities designed to promote personal growth and social interactions.

The AMAZE journey helps develop true friendships, meaningful relationships, hands-on activities and confidence building. The $20 fee (Y-members, $25 for non-members) includes a 2011-2012 membership to the Girl Scouts and educational workbooks used as tools for lessons and discussion. The group meets at the Valley Y Teen Center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3 - 4:30pm. Discover, connect, act.

Charter Member Appreciation Day

Go Green Logo

What a treat! Charter members came out to the Y's Camp Reed for a day of fun and frolicking on October 23rd. Crisp air and colorful leaves swirled as guests challenged themselves with climbing feats, concentrated on the archery course, took long deep breaths during a hike through the woods, canoed beautiful Fan Lake and tapped their inner creative genius with arts and crafts.

Charter members are early adopters and we could not be more grateful for their excitement and enthusiasm as we opened new doors. Those doors continue to provide a portal to big things at the YMCA! For those charter members unable to attend, we hope to see you at future events.
