The North facility hosts First Annual Y Family Field Day
Summer doesn't have to end just yet! We want to give summer a tantalizing sendoff as we ask you to join us for the first ever Y Family Field Day hosted at the North Y on Sunday, Sept. 18 from 2-4pm.
The Health & Wellness department has developed a creative lineup of age-variant activities guaranteed to test your affinity for fun. If a healthy challenge interests you, then maneuver your way around our obstacle course fashioned with ropes, tires and whatever else we could get our hands on.
Parents, hopefully you can keep up with your kids as they expend a seemingly endless amount of energy on our diverse set of mini-games. As you can expect from any Y event, nutritional snacks will treat your taste buds in our outdoor pavilion.
On the day of the event, be sure to approach the North Y front desk to receive a map displaying the day's events and features. We would love to see you and your family experience the active afternoon we have in store at our North location for Y Family Field Day.

Safe Sitter Program Guides Teens
Program teaches babysitting essentials
On our list of teen offerings, Safe Sitters has a special place for teens aged 11-16. This physician-designed training program guides adolescents on the path to becoming a safe, nurturing babysitter. Through engaging instruction, demonstrations, and interactive games, participants learn what it takes to manage a babysitting business.
Whether it's entertaining young ones, redirecting and managing difficult behaviors or saving a choking child or infant, teens will leave with the confidence and knowledge to succeed in the most vital situations.
Thirteen-year-old Sophia says, "Babysitting class is important because it teaches you the essentials. If something happens, you know how to deal with it; whether it's as little as crying when the parent leaves or as serious as choking."
Students receive a Safe Sitter manual, tote bag, band-aids and flashlight along with their completion card. Workshops are offered monthly at all three YMCA locations in a three-day or all day (Saturday) format. Click here for more information.

YMCA supports Girl Scout JOURNEYS
New format encourages structured learning for young girls
The Spokane Valley Y is partnering with Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho to deliver JOURNEYS. This new Girl Scout program helps girls develop leadership through a series of themed, grade-specific activities and discussions. This journey works to achieve the highest potential in every Girl Scout as girls learn, then walk and finally complete their path with reflection and celebration.
With a fun grade-specific ranking system (K-12), girls begin at the Daisy rank and eventually work up to Ambassador. This allows them to look back at just how much they've gained in knowledge and experience through their journeys.
Three key concepts drive the leadership experience: Discover, Connect and Take Action. Discover is all about how girls understand themselves and their values. Connect teaches the importance of teaming up to inspire and aid those in need locally and globally. Last, Take Action, girls will put their skills into practice to positively affect others.
