Come into the office this week to register for Presentation's new "BBQ, Bands & Bunkers" event scheduled for Sunday, May 6 and Monday, May 7 at the world famous Sonoma Golf Club.

Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m., there will be a casual gourmet BBQ dinner and live auction for golfers, friends, family and the community at large. Afterward, guests will enjoy the music of Presentation parent bands "Loosely Covered" and "Neverland." Sonoma residents David Grohol and Scott DeMartini play in "Loosely Covered" and Little Vineyard owner and dad, Rich Little, headlines "Neverland".  Tickets are $75 and open to all, over 21.  Everyone at our school, regardless of their interest in golf, are urged to join us for this fun evening party.

The golf begins on Monday, May 7 at 8:30 a.m. with registration, use of the driving range and a putting contest.  A gourmet box lunch from Sonoma Market and wine will be provided for players.  The shot gun starts at 10:00 a.m. where there will be prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive and a hole in one contest.   An awards ceremony immediately follows.

Tickets are $200 per player or $800 for a foursome and include the Sunday evening party. For more information or to make reservations, please e-mail Nancy Bei at nancybei@comcast.net or call 935-0122 ext. 202 by May 1.

If you can help on Tuesday, please reply to Beth Fox at bfox@presentationschool.com

We thank you, our students thank you, and our beautiful garden thanks you as well!

Presentation Students Enjoy Array of Spring Field Experiences
DC

They visited the US Air Force Memorial, the Sept. 11 Memorial, Capitol Hill, the Library of Congress, the Holocaust Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Lincoln Memorial, Mt. Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, the Naval Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the Air & Space Museum and MORE!
Panning

Grade 4 just returned from three days in Coloma, studying the Gold Rush (and panning for gold!) as the culmination of their California history curriculum.

The Coloma Outdoor Discovery School's Gold Rush program is designed for fourth graders, and is correlated with the California Content Standards. The program is designed to celebrate the culture, music, and folklore of the California Gold Rush while using lessons of the past to awaken students' interest and sense of responsibility for the environment.

At CODS, students live the Gold Rush: stories, songs, skits, and characterizations all help to convey the social and economic community of early Coloma. Students will walk in the footsteps of the 49ers and experience some of the challenges of surviving away from home.  All of the educational programs at the Outdoor School operate around the concept of respect: for nature, oneself, and others.
Admissions Update -- Enrollment Hits 190!
Admissions

These last several months have been a whirlwind in the Admissions Office.  We are accepting contracts from current families, giving kindergarten assessments, and greeting the many students who have shadowed and parents who have toured recently.

We have welcomed five new students who have started this month! An important part of the admissions process is helping families determine if we are a good "fit" in the area of academics, extra-curricular activities, values and community.  We are very fortunate for the exceptional new families that have joined our community.

In addition to our new students, we continue to accept applications for new kinders.  Our Admissions and Enrollment Team will soon be putting together a cocktail party for prospective parents and then a little later for the new kinder class.  Let us know if you would like to invite anyone who might not have made their decision yet.

In addition to new kinders, we have accepted seven new students in other grades for next year, and there will be more to come in the next few weeks.  We will have full enrollment in several classes.

On a personal note, I would like to thank all of our families who have reached out and invited others to come to our campus and also to all of you for the warm welcome to our new students and families.

5th Grade Crest Project
 Crests
5th grade parent, Rosemary McNeely, has been active with the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art's Color Theory Exhibit. In a terrific exercise in creativity, she invited our 5th grade class to come up with a new take on our school crest.  Their creations are currently on display in the library.
Science Olympiad Team Enjoys Wide Range of Events

Presentation School's The Science Olympiad team is made up of fourth and fifth graders coached by Mrs. Gallagher, Mr. Kuschner, and Mrs. Mitchell.

Presentation Grad Nina Sheridan '10 Awarded State Department Language Program in China

Recent Presentation grad Nina Sheridan just received notification that she has been chosen to participate in the State Department's National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) for six weeks this summer in China.  The goal of the NSLI-Y program is to develop a cadre of young Americans with the language skills necessary to advance international dialogue. According to the program, NSLI-Y alumni have gone on to be leaders in a variety of international fields in the private, academic or government sector.

The languages offered by the program include Arabic, Mandarin, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian and Turkish, and students are placed in China, Egypt, India, Jordan, Korea, Morocco, Russia, Taiwan, Tajikistan and Turkey. Cities are selected in cooperation with the U.S. embassies and consulates in the host locations.

The process for acceptance is extremely competitive as the entire cost of the program is covered by the State Dept. including travel, accommodations, language instruction, a cell phone and some incidentals. The value of the summer program to China exceeds $10,000. Applicants fill out an application form in the fall with shorts essays, transcripts and recommendations.  Less than half of all applicants are then named semi-finalists who then interview with program administrators or alumni.  To apply: www.nsliforyouth.org.

Nina is finishing her sophomore year at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut.  She hope to pursue a career in international relations in college.
