Joel Kushner Wins National Science Teachers Academy Trip
Congratulations to 4th grade teacher Joel Kuschner who just found out he has been selected to attend the 2012 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy this July 22-27 at Liberty Science Center in New Jersey. He competed against more than 1,000 educators from all 50 states for a spot in this program and his acceptance letter stated that his "dedication and passion truly separated him from the competition." Mr. Kuschner was nominated by the Cohen family (Atticus and Izzy).
The Teachers Academy was founded in 2005 to provide elementary teachers tools to enhance curricula, and an opportunity to network with other eduators and discover innovative ways to teach math and science to students. Since launching, more than 3,000 teachers have attended the academy, impacting more than 175,000 students nationwide with the lessons and skills they have brought home with them. Said founder, golfer Phil Mickelson in the letter to Mr. Kushner, "We know that your hard work and determination to inspire students to develop and sustain an interest in math and science will undoubtably make an invaluable contribution to school and community."
Run by the National Science Teachers Association, this all-expense paid experience should be an incredible one for Mr. Kuschner.

Bike Race Fundraiser for All Ages
On May 12, hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of bicyclists will depart from the Plaza in the Echelon Gran Fondo cycling event. Many of the participants will be riding for a cause: the event gives riders the freedom to select charities of their choice, make fundraising commitments, and use the ride as a vehicle to generate funds. Under the leadership of our team captain, Presentation dad and avid cyclist John Crean, the Presentation School is looking for participants to join our team! With three distances - 11, 50, and 75 miles - even the casual cyclist has the opportunity to ride to support our school.
All riders start together at 9am. This is not a race! The 11 mile ride is easy and everyone rides at their own pace throughout. Everyone gets a police escort and the thrill of a helicopter whirling over head. Food and rest stops are provided by Echelon along the way. SAG vehicles for support or bail out are also provided. And be sure to stick around for a festival, great music and food after the ride!
Presentation families are encouraged to participate in this event as a means to help raise money for our school library initiative (see story below).
EVERYONE CAN FONDO - Kids FREE!

Presentation Launches Library, Reading & Technology Campaign This spring, Presentation is launching a three-pronged campaign to buy more than one thousand new books for the library, to purchase a renowned accelerated reading program and to buy new laptops for the school.
First up is our initiative to build our library collection!
Faculty members have created lists of books needed for the library. If you are able, we invite you to purchase a hard cover book on the list or select a book you'd like to see in our collection. The library will place a nameplate inside the book, acknowledging your gift. You can buy nooks in one of several ways: order from our Wish List on Amazon.com; send an email and we will put a specific book on your school credit card; stop by Reader's Books and bring the book to the school office (Readers is offering a 15% discount for all books on the list); or finally, if you'd prefer someone else to do the purchasing, you may write a check to the Presentation School Library in the amount of the book, and we will procure books on the list.

Reading Contest Launched This Week

In honor of our library initiative, outlined in the story above, our much anticipated Reading Contest began this week. Students in grade k-8 are invited to register with Mrs. Armer and to receive a bookmark. Their name will be entered onto the poster in the library. As students read and report in, a sticker will be placed by their name for # of pages read (must be at their reading level). As students accumulate stickers, prizes can be chosen from the prize cart on Fridays. The student who reads the most pages at their reading level wins the grand prize. The contest ends on the last day of our Scholastic Book Fair: May 18.
Pages per sticker are as follows:
Grades K, 1, 2: 1 hour per sticker Grades 3, 4, 5 : 50 pages per sticker
Grades 6, 7, 8 : 75 pages per sticker
Students are expected to be honest in their reporting. |
6th Grade Girls Basketball Off to a Great Start
Our 6th grade girls team had another decisive win this week against Sonoma Country Day School (They are undefeated!). According to Coach Bud McCulligh, each player contributed in this win, whether it was a timely shot, a 3 pointer, (they had 3 of them), a strong rebound, a head first dive for a loose ball or an aggressive steal on defense... it was truly a team win. Said Bud, "This game had it all and I am very proud of the effort the girls put in."
Their next game is Monday, at 4:00pm, against Windsor Christian Academy at home. They only have two more home games so please come out and cheer our girls on.

Kinders Collect Books

As part of their Easter service project, the Kinder class collected new and gently used books to send to a school in New Mexico. This school has 90% ESL children, many of them from migrant families, and most of them do not have books of their own. Kinders Kavvy and Miles commented, "It is nice to be able to give books to a class that needs them." |
Join us for the Parent's Association meeting on Wednesday at 8:30am.
Please consider a role on the Executive Committee of the PA for next year.

Our Schoolwide Seder Celebration was a Huge Success!

The Passover Seder is a Jewish ritual feast that marks the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The Seder is a traditional ritual performed by a community or by multiple generations of a family, involving a retelling of the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Seder customs include eating matzo and partaking of symbolic foods placed on the Passover Seder Plate. Thank you to Mrs. Davis and to Rabbi Bella for organizing Presentation's seder celebration. |
