Parent Association Executive Board Members Sought for 2012-2013 School Year!
Spring is almost here and we need to create the Parent Association Executive Board for the 2012/2013 school year. The PA mission is to support our school and teachers and to build community through social events and enrichment opportunities. The Co-Presidents oversee the social/speaker/garden committees and preside at regular meetings. New this year, the Parent's Association Co-Presidents will also have seats on the school's new Operations and Heritage committees that were created in the recent Board of Trustee restructuring.
Parent Association Executive Board positions:
-- Co-Presidents
-- Treasurer
-- Communications Coordinator
-- Classroom Coordinators (one for the upper grades, one for the lower grades)
If you are interested in volunteering for a position, or would like to nominate someone for a position, please email Terry Mathison at terrymathison@gmail.com or Carolina Salmonsen at csalmonsen@msn.com. Director Fischman is also available to answer questions.
The current Executive Board will compile the slate of candidates that will be put forward in April for approval by the whole school community.
Being on the Executive Board is a great opportunity to get involved with the school community. Please consider getting involved!

Rock Climbing Finishes Winter Season
Sign-ups on Now for Spring
On Saturday, February 25th, Presentation's rock climbing team hit the highway to Santa Cruz for their third competition. All chalked up, shoes tied or velcroed on some feet and eager to see what types of routes were ahead on the walls. The climbing facility is located in a spacious warehouse broken down into three areas: two of which were rope climbing walls, the third was a bouldering room.
The climbers included sixth graders: Owen Walthard, Wriley Robles, Layla McDermott, Sterling Macdonell. Fifth grader, Isabel Macdonell. Seventh graders: Maria Fernandez and Isabel Garon.
Each of our climbers demonstrated perseverance, strength and determination as they ascended the walls. They all have made such incredible strides of progress in their climbing techniques over the course of these past few weeks. Coach Patrick Smithson proved to be a remarkable teacher to our young climbers. He pushed them beyond their limits by realizing their abilities and motivated them with encouraging words every step of the way.
The second half of the season starts in late March. The Spring season will run 9 weeks and will feature some sort of outdoor climbing in lieu of indoor comps, with the chance of some gym visits to places with big walls like Planet Granite.
The cost will be the same as for the first season- $150 for big kids, $100 for younger kids. See Patrick Smithson for more information. |

Grade 5's Color Theory Project Comes to Life

Report from Art Docent Rosemary McNeely:
Our 5th grade students are producing beautiful work again this year for the COLOR THEORY PROJECT for the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. They worked with opposites and monochromatic palates, and students used the color wheels they hand made for referring to the primarys, secondarys, tertiary colors.
They are now fluent in what warm and cool colors are, and are exploring what hue, value, intensity, tint, tone, shade and neutral colors all mean when we have our critiques of their work in class. We are using Berthe Morisot impressionist painting for inspiration along with the school crest in different color ways. We will show a body of their work at the museum in May and visit the museum as a class as well. The students really enjoy using a "pointer" during critique time and analyzing their work, through pointing to the area they are describing. We incorporate the VTS (Visual Thinking Strategy) method in talking about the work as taught to us by the museum. Kevin & I hosted the training for our school staff 6 years ago and it is exciting to see the fruits of the effort, through the art classes! |

Middle School Students To Embark on 30 Hour Famine

On Friday, March 30 and 31, thirty middle school students who have volunteered for the opportunity, will embark on a community service project entitled the 30 Hour Famine. This project is designed to raise money and awareness for those around the world who suffer from hunger, poverty and a lack of hope. Students participating must be present for all 30 hours, they will miss three main meals (drinking lots of juice instead) and embark on a community service project. They will be sequestered in the library, and sleep there, when they are not off campus participating in the service project.
This initiative is a worldwide program, led here locally at Presentation by 6th grade teacher Mrs. Walthard, with assistance from the Student Council. There is no cost to the participants but they are expected to raise $180 each for the program.
Please deliver permission slips to the office Tuesday morning. |

8th Graders to Lunch at La Hacienda
The eighth graders have been recently studying vocabulary and phrases related to food, and ordering food. What better way to use this vocabulary than to go order from a Mexican restaurant where they have to order in Spanish? The class will be going to La Hacienda in two groups on March 15 and 16.

Golf Tournament Planning in Full Swing

Join us for this year's "BBQ, Bands & Bunkers" golf Tournament spread over two days (due to the fact we could not put so much fun into just one day), Sunday, May 6, 2012 and Monday, May 7, 2012 at the world famous Sonoma Golf Club.
The tournament begins Sunday, May 6th evening at 5:00PM with a casual gourmet BBQ dinner which you will enjoy during our exciting live auction. Then sit back for the remainder of the evening to enjoy and dance to the fabulous music of "Our Own" Loosely Covered and Neverland bands. This is also a good opportunity to begin to formulate your winning strategies for tomorrow's game.
Monday, May 7th begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration, use of the driving range and a putting contest. A gourmet box lunch from Sonoma Market will be provided for you. Then it is on to the course for a shot gun start at 10:00 a.m. where there will be prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive and a hole in one contest. An awards ceremony immediately follows.
Tickets are $200.00 per player or $800.00 for a foursome, dinner for non golfers $75 per person. If you have any questions, would like to make reservations or volunteer to help please e-mail Nancy Bei at nancybei@comcast.net or call 935-0122 ext. 202.

The March hot lunch menu is available HERE. Thanks to the Student Council, starting in March chocolate milk will be available on Fridays.
Tuition Assistance Deadline:
The priority tuition assistance deadline is past but if you expect to need aid, you may still apply (see school web site for hot link). For questions, or to receive application information, please contact Nancy Waarich-Fischman at 935-0122 or nfischman@presentationschool.com.
Safety First:
In the coming weeks, you will notice several changes that are designed to make our campus safer. During the hours of 9:00 - 2:30, the side parking lot will be coned off. We are asking parents and visitors to park in the front lot and then report to the Office. As Presentation is situated on a large parcel, it is important for faculty and staff to know who is on campus. Thank you for your cooperation.
Winter worries:
It's that time of the year! Be on the look out for those tiny creatures that make our students scratch their heads. If the little critters are found, please contact Mrs. Wallace for information on next steps.
Volunteers Needed: A volunteer is needed to help in the office on Tuesday mornings. Please let Mrs. Wallace know if you can help out!
