Presentation Leads Pack at Sonoma County Science Fair!
7th Grader Renee Serota To Head
to LA for Statewide Competition
Renne
The top point scorers in the Presentation School Middle School Science Fair traveled to Santa Rosa this week to compete against 16 other schools in the Sonoma County Science Fair.

At the end of the day, the top projects from more than a hundred students at the 16 competing schools were invited on to the San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair and then just six projects were selected to compete at the California State Science Fair in Los Angeles.

Congratulations to our three students -- 8th graders Jack Greenberg and Emma Cooper and 7th grader Renee Serota -- who will compete in San Francisco (the most of any Sonoma Valley middle school) and to Renee for then being chosen as one of only three middle school students in the entire County to compete at the statewide level.

Also honored from our 8th grade that day were second place winners Kiki Couchman and Olivia Yazzolino and third place winner Matteo Della Santina.  Matteo, Jack and Emma were also the recipients of cash awards for projects in special categories of accomplishment.

And finally, a big thank you and congratulations to our science teacher, Mrs. Katie Faircloth!
Grades 2 & 3 Sing With the San Francisco Opera Guild!
Opera
Grades 2 and 3 last week participated in "Sing-A-Story," an interactive opera experienced with San Francisco Opera Guild.

Every child had a role in Wagner's "Das Rheingold."  Children sang and acted in costume as they retold the timeless tale of a journey of a magical ring.  A great time was had by all.
Prospective Parents "Bring a Friend" Lunch & Tour

8th Grade Geometry Students Stage Bridge Building Competition
Geo bridges

Soloquest Geometry teacher Jan Celio comes to campus to teach nine of our 8th grade students high school geometry (left to right Brianna Lehane, Taylor Gulrajani, Quinn Sheridan, Sonia Krikorian, Jack Greenberg, Maria Fernandez, Isabel Garon, Kiki Couchman and Graci Bundschu).

This past week, the students had a three-fold assignment: a research paper on the four major types of bridges, a scale model design, and a model of a bridge built out of popsicle sticks and white glue.

Says Mrs. Celio:  "I wanted to give the students an experiential, hands-on project that would be fun and exciting and would show them that geometry really does have relevance in our world."  Students  put the bridges through a strength test by loading them with many types of weights.  Every bridge held at least 150 times its own weight and most of them carried the maximum load of 16.5 kilograms.  Added Mrs. Celio:  "I am, as usual, very proud of these students."

Catching Up with a Grad:  Emma Conlon, '08
Emma Conlon

Emma Conlon, Presentation class of 2008, was in the news recently for receiving the Kris Beining Memorial Scholarship Award for excellence in volleyball at St. Vincent de Paul High School. The Kris Beining award recognizes commitment, passion and focus in the game and off the court and was awarded by her Coach, Teri Scott and Sue Keller the Athletic Director.

Emma began playing volleyball as a little girl at the Boys & Girls Club of Sonoma Valley in 3rd grade and at Presentation. Emma has been a Scholar-Athlete in high school playing all four years. For the 2011 season she was named  NCL II Volleyball All-League outside hitter/setter to the second team and Varsity Co-Captain of the SV Mustangs who completed the first round of NCS playoffs at Oakland Prep!

Emma is a 4.0 GPA, Dean's List student and she is excited to head to college in September.  She is waiting to hear from her top choices, most of which are on the East Coast, and she promised to keep us posted.

Our Kinders have a long standing tradition of bringing in a display of 100 objects to celebrate the 100th Day of School. This year they had gold rocks, paper clips, stickers, hair clips, bolts, and that is just the beginning!  Pictured is Solana Staes with her hand-sewn heart upon which she and her mom attached 100 buttons! All the projects will be presented at our next Showcase on the 17th.

SCHOOL NEWS:

Tuition Assistance Deadline:

Tuition assistance applications need to be submitted to FAST by February 15 for early determination (see school web site for hot link).  For questions, or to receive application information, please contact:

·  Larry Christensen, Director of Finance, ext. 207, or email him at lchristensen@presentationschool.com, or

·  Beth Fox, Director of Admissions and Development, ext. 201, or email  her atbfox@presentationschool.com.

Yearbook Ads:  Don't forget your Well Wishers pages are due by Feb. 15.  In the past, the "Well-wisher" section of our yearbook has been extremely popular.  It gives you the opportunity to honor your graduate, to wish them well for the future, and to reminisce about times gone by.

Safety First:

In the coming weeks, you will notice several changes that are designed to make our campus safer.  During the hours of 9:00 - 2:30, the side parking lot will be coned off.  We are asking parents and visitors to park in the front lot and then report to the Office.   As Presentation is situated on a large parcel, it is important for faculty and staff to know who is on campus.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Winter worries:

It's that time of the year!  Be on the look out for those tiny creatures that make our students scratch their heads.  If the little critters are found, please contact Mrs. Wallace for information on next steps.

Uniforms:
As the children are growing and you are purchasing new uniform items, please remember that skorts, pants and outwear are to be purchased from either Classic Design or Land's End Presentation list.  Any questions, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.  You will find the uniform policy in the Family Handbook.

Lunch:  Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to help with lunches.  We still need After Care volunteers.  Please contact Mrs. Wallace or Ms. Amy if you are interested and would like more information regarding responsibilities.

Box Tops:  We are still collecting Box Tops!  Please bring them to the school office before March 1.  Thank you!
