Greetings!

Some quick but important notes
about upcoming events:

Our Middle School Science Fair is on Thursday, December 8th and all parents are invited to attend.  Every grade will visit the Fair and vote on the best experiments.

We are looking for parent volunteers to help judge 7th and 8th grade projects.  The judges will be responsible for working with a judging partner to conduct short interviews with each student about their project.  In addition, the judges complete score cards and help select projects to send to the County Science Fair.

If you are interested in acting as a judge (and not the parent of a 7th or 8th grader), please contact Mrs. Faircloth via e-mail by Tuesday, December 6.

Our Christmas Liturgy this year, for the first time, will be held in our Activity Center on Thursday, December 15th at 7pm.   Our students will tell the Christmas story during a mass celebrated by Father Patrick Leslie. We will reflect on the joy of this special time and the anticipation of Jesus coming to us once again as a little child. From the beginning with the Posada Song, until the end with Silent Night, take a moment this busy season to remember the reason for it all.  This is a beautiful holiday celebration for our entire school community and all students are expected to attend in full dress uniform.

New Middle School Electives Begin
and Feature New Offerings

This semester's Middle School Electives program includes a handful of new offerings as well as old favorites.  Each 6th, 7th and 8th grader chooses an Elective at the start of the semester.  The elective classes meet on Monday and Wednesday afternoons at 2:30pm.  The offerings vary each semester and school parents are welcome to come forth with new suggestions if they are interested in teaching a class.  Past electives that we would love to resume include: viticulture, digital photography and Mandarin.

This semester the students chose between:  Fashion Design (new!), Journalism (school newspaper), Yearbook, Student Council, Choir and Mathletes (new!).  For more information, please see Mrs. Carroll who oversees the program.

Advent:  A Time of Reflection and Celebration

     Advent

The word Advent means "coming" and the Church begins her liturgical year with the season of Advent, which celebrates the three comings of Jesus: first, as a baby at Bethlehem, second, in the eucharist, and third, the final coming at the end of time. Advent encompasses the four weeks before Christmas and is often marked by the lighting of four candles, one for each Sunday, on the Advent wreath, itself a symbol of eternity. On Monday, November 28th, the student body of Presentation School gathered to start the first week of Advent with prayer and the lighting of an Advent wreath, as we invited Jesus to come once again into our lives.

Fire truckOur students were very well-behaved recently when we had an unexpected visit from the Fire Department.  The students gave the firemen a round of applause as the truck pulled away.
Grades 3, 4 and 5 Visit Lawrence Hall of Science
Lawrence Hall
The Intermediate grades from Presentation last week spent the day at the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley.  They even got to take a school bus there!

While there, the students attended math workshops, including one on 3-D Geometry in which our students used two-dimensional polygons to build three-dimensional shapes called polyhedra.   They also did a workshop in Tessellating Art in which they created a tessellating pattern in the style of the artist M. C. Escher and had the chance to recognize tessellating patterns in art and architecture.  Finally, all three classes watched an information 3-D film on paleontology and dinosaurs.

If you haven't already checked it out, come see the beautiful Peter Pan shadow box that 8th grade parent Wendy Owens made for Mrs. Miller!
Dellas
Thank you to the Della Santina family and to the 8th grade class for hosting a beautiful brunch at Della Santina's on Sunday.  The restaurant was packed, the decorations were beautiful and the food was incredible!  Pictured are some of the 8th grade workers right before the doors opened.

Our Thanksgiving Food Drive was much appreciated:  St. Vincent's reported that they distributed 172 boxes to feed about 1000 adults and children. and that Presentation donated 9 boxes and contributions to purchase at least a dozen more turkeys and trimmings from Safeway.  They were able to distribute a basket to everyone who requested one.
