Teachers Participate in Professional Development Day with Prominent Neuroscience Educator
Pat Wolfe

This Monday, Dr. Pat Wolfe will be working with K-8th grade staff at Presentation in a full day seminar, designed to increase teachers' understanding of the intricacies of the brain and learning, with an emphasis on creating a "Brain Compatible Classroom".   Teachers will leave the workshop with an "arsenal" of specific strategies that they can implement into their curriculum to enhance each aspect of the learning process for all children.

Dr. Pat Wolfe is a highly regarded expert in the field of brain research as it relates to educational practice. Over the past 25 years, she has conducted workshops for thousands of school administrators, teachers, boards of education, and parents throughout the United States, and in over 50 countries abroad, regarding current knowledge of how the brain learns, and the implications for teaching our children. In addition to her ongoing research and publishing, Pat has many years of practical experience in the field of education, including her years of teaching in a variety of K-12 classrooms. She has also served as an adjunct professor at the university level, and was Director of Curriculum at Napa County of Education for many years.

Parents are urged to reserve their spot now at her presentation for parents on Tuesday evening at 6:30pm by clicking here.

Presentation School Launches Annual Fund for 2011-2012 School Year

ANNUAL FUND

Over the past few days, The Presentation School Annual Fund letter likely landed in your mailbox. Thank you for opening and reading it! And of course, thank you from the heart for your reply.  Every year, The Presentation School Annual Fund gives crucial support to our students and teachers.  Like just about every independent school (and many public ones, too), Presentation relies upon charitable gifts that help us pay our hard-working teachers, offer a large program of tuition aid, buy books and classroom materials, care for our beautiful campus, and more.

As a community that believes in the importance of education, we come together each year to make the remarkable work of The Presentation School part of our year-end philanthropy. This year's Annual Fund goal is $100,000 - a challenge to be sure. But with your help, we can do it. Please keep the school on your list. No matter the size, every gift to The Presentation School is much needed, deeply appreciated, and fully tax-deductible.

To help The Presentation School get the ball rolling right now, please click here.

From the students, teachers, staff, and wide circle of Presentation School friends... thank you again!
First Middle School Dance Set for November 18th
Middle school dance

The schools 6th, 7th and 8th graders will be enjoying the first Middle School Dance of this school year on Friday, November 18th from 6:30pm-9pm.

Middle schoolers from our Middle School Sports League and from St. Francis are invited to attend and our students are allowed to invite a friend from another area middle school if they turn in a request form in advance.  Each ticket is $7.

The dance is organized by the Student Council under the leadership of 6th grade teacher Tracy Walthard.  Chaperones are still needed, please email twalthard@presentationschool.com if you can help out.
Grade 3 Enjoys Environmental Discovery Center
Discovery Grade 3
Third graders recently had a field experience at the Environmental Discovery Center at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa. After studying the biomes of the world and the special adaptations that animals and plants have in order to survive in their respective biomes, students were able to see, hear, touch and observe some real life examples.

The EDC has a man-made tide pool, an extensive collection of taxidermy animals, a lake,  and an immense Storytellers' Cavern. The students were amazed, (and even a little bit disgusted), to discover that a sea star's stomach comes out of its body in order to eat its prey.

3rd grader Sean Flaherty said, "The trip was so inspiring and we got to see lots of examples of animals and plants and we learned about their adaptations."

Presentation Students Perform in Sonoma Ballet Conservatory's The Magic Toy Shop
Ballet poster
Combining traditional character dance and classical ballet, The Magic Toy Shop is the enchanting tale of a Shopkeeper's beloved toys who come to life and happily perform for prospective customers, until the day when two spoiled girls enter the store with their mothers and decide to purchase and separate a pair of Can-Can Dolls. The night before the families are to return for their selections, the toys share an evening of farewell performances before the Cossack declares they should rebel and fight to keep the Can-Can Dolls from such a wretched fate. The next day, when the families return for their dolls, the toys do indeed rebel, causing the Shopkeeper to refuse to sell her precious toys to the girls, who leave in a huff from the magical shop while the Shopkeeper and her toys celebrate. Bring the whole family for a fantasy afternoon of dance that is sure to entertain all ages!

Performing in the production will be Presentation students Layla and Sara McDermott.

Reserved seating tickets for the 1:00 p.m. shows on November 19 & 20 are on sale now and are available at Sonoma Ballet or the Sebastiani Theatre. Tickets are $22 (adults) and $17 (students/seniors).  Tickets for the dress rehearsal on Thursday are only $5.  Call 938-1424 for details.

If your child is involved in an exciting endeavor outside of school, please let us know so we can share the good news.

 School News:

Parents dropping by campus during the day should stop by the office to get a visitor badge.  Presentation is an open and active campus, and for the children's safety, we must know who is on campus.

Please remember that forgotten items and lunches must be brought to the office.  Do not go directly to the classroom.  This will minimize interruptions in the academic program.  Birthday treats also must be brought to the office, preferably in the morning.  We will notify the teacher and determine the most appropriate time to bring them to the classroom.  Again, this will minimize disruptions to the classroom routine and the birthday treats will be scheduled so that they may be enjoyed and your student's special day celebrated.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Lost and Found:  There is a large amount of uniform items that have made their way to the lost and found.  Items with names have been returned to the owner; remaining items will be sold at the Outgrown Uniform Sale on Wednesday, November 16th.  Help the lost to be found!

For the 3rd year, The Presentation School has collected items that will be sent directly to our Armed Forces troops around the world, and especially to Afghanistan and Iran.  A list of items was sent home last week.  Please consider making a donation to our soldiers, sailors and Marines.  The deadline is December 1st - all items may be brought directly to the office.  Any questions, please contact Ms. Fischman.

We are still missing quite a few emergency cards.  It is most IMPORTANT that you turn the cards into the office immediately.

For parents of 8th graders:

Parents are urged to contact the 8th grade teachers as soon as possible to request letters of recommendation, where needed.
