Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Gifted Program Participation Info Session

On Thursday, November 3rd at 8:20am we will be offering a short information session about the Johns Hopkins gifted program. Parents of the 45 students in grades 3-8 who scored in the 95th percentile or above in Total Reading or Total Math on the 2011 Stanford-10 tests have received an invitation in the mail but all school families are welcome to attend to learn more.
Parents of students new to the school should check their student's 2011 testing results if interested. Students scoring in "Advanced" range in STAR testing are frequently also eligible to participate.
The non-profit Center for Talented Youth (CTY) organization, a division of Johns Hopkins University, has a three-part mission of teaching, research, and service. More specifically, CTY:
-
Seeks students of the highest academic ability through its talent search and offers them challenging educational opportunities that develop the intellect, encourage achievement, and nurture social development.
- Conducts research and evaluation studies that advance knowledge about gifted education; develops best practices in educating highly able children; and disseminates its findings to parents, the education community, and policymakers.
- Supports educators in their efforts to meet the needs of highly able students, assists parents in advocating for their gifted children, and participates actively in community service.
CTY identifies, assesses, and recognizes students with exceptional mathematical and/or verbal reasoning abilities. Students may participate in Grades 2-6 or Grades 7-8. Participation in the CTY Talent Search costs $37 and the program offerings will be outlined at the meeting on Nov. 3. For more information, visit www.cty.jhu.edu. |

MONDAY SPEAKER SERIES EVENT CHANGED! SEE MESSAGE BELOW FROM SPEAKERS COMMITTEE

Unfortunately, one of the two speakers has to attend a funeral on Monday and we had to postpone the talk, "What We Can Learn from America's Top High Schools." David Ball, head of the Upper School at Milton Academy is still coming to Sonoma, however, and we have decided to invite him to join us for an informal Q&A at the same time in our school library, just for our parents.
What Dave has learned over the course of his career, culminating in leading a school that was named by the Wall Street Journal as one of the top 25 global high schools, is relevant to all of us with middle school students, no matter where they eventually attend high school.
We hope that you will come on Monday at drop-off at 8:20am to meet Dave. He'll speak about what he is seeing as key trends in high school curriculums, college prep, standardized testing and whatever other topics you might find useful. As many of us agonize over the decision as to which high school will be the best fit for our children, he'll be able to share some insights into how you might evaluate and measure the success of a high school.

Turning Everyday Shopping Into Cash for PresentationIf you are a frequent Sonoma Market shopper, please take the time to register the credit and/or debit cards that you use to shop there on the eScrip web site. Did you know that Sonoma Market contributes 3% of your purchase up to $200, 4% up to $400 and a whopping 5% on any shopping trips over $400 directly to The Presentation School (#137107396)?
All you need to do is log onto your account (or create an account) at escrip.com, go to "welcome to my escrip" and then click on "register your cards." You can click on "view my monthly purchase reports" to check up on all the good that your shopping is doing for the school! The same hold true at Lucky Market, though in a slightly different way. Stop by the office and ask for a free S.H.A.R.E.S card. Each time that card is swiped, points are issued to your organizations account. One S.H.A.R.E.S. point equals $1 on a qualified purchase. Presentation will receive a quarterly check for the amount earned at the rate of up to 3%. The cards do NOT have any value on them, they are just used to track the purchase value.
