Notes from the Director:
Living the field experience: providing outstanding field experiences for our students is one of the things that makes Presentation unique among its peers. Field experiences are chosen by the faculty to support the academic, spiritual, social and athletic student learning. Additionally, we hope that the field experiences will foster learning and memories that the students will take into the future. Thanks to the support of our parents we are able to provide outstanding learning experiences for all students.
As Director, I decided to "live the experience" and so joined the 7th grade Humanities class on their annual trip to Ashland's Shakespeare Festival, a field experience designed to support the historical and literary curricular units associated with the study of world history. This was truly an outstanding adventure! The plays, of course, were excellent -the acting, singing, sets were of the highest quality. Two of the plays, Pirates of Penzance and Love's Labor's Lost, were performed in the outdoor Elizabethan Theater - yes, it was cold and raining but this was forgotten as we were pulled into the stories, following the twists, turns and outcomes of the plays. We were fortunate to be able to attend a Prologue prior to each play to ensure that the students (and adults who studied Shakespeare many years ago) truly understood and appreciated the intricacies of what we were about to experience. The back stage tour was one of the highlights. We experienced all the creative energy that goes into each production. However, the best part was being with the class...watching them experience theater, explore Ashland and spend time with each other was worth the trip.
What I really came to understand is the preparation that goes into the field experiences. The teacher and students began their preparation for this trip over the summer with summer reading and writing assignments. Students were given assignments to work on while in Ashland and others that will be completed upon our return. This type of preparation is true for all the field experiences from the farm visits in kindergarden to the 8th grade tour of Washington, D.C. Did the students enjoy the trip? I'm sure they did. Did Mrs. Carroll and the chaperones enjoy the experience? Ask them - after they catch up on their sleep! As for me, I'm ready for the next field experience - look out Washington, D.C.! Here we come!

Kinders Visit Greenstring Farms
On Wednesday, Sept. 28th, the Kinders went on a fieldtrip to Greenstring Farms in Petaluma.
They were able to feed the cows and the sheep, pet the silky chickens, pick peppers from the field, as well as broccoli rabe. They learned about composting, planting, and harvesting. Upon their return to school, they found, in our own garden, that the carrot seeds they planted a few weeks ago have sprouted!

6th Graders Loving School's First-Ever Multi-Day Field Experience at Mount Hermon

From 6th Grade Teacher Tracy Walthard on Tuesday:
The students unpacked, had a great taco lunch, did their first hike, swam, had rec time, had dinner, did campfire (indoors because it looked like rain, but as I type...no rain). We ended the evening singing worship songs and roasting marshmellows. There are happy, tired faces everywhere I look! Tomorrow we will be completing the vertical climbing wall in the morning, and WOW, is it tall! I'll be sure to take lots of pictures.

Coach Amy Reports on Second Cross Country Meet [Note: Only 5th graders participated in this meet as our 6th and 7th graders were on overnight field trips]
Sonoma Academy hosted our second meet on Tuesday under temperamental gray skies and chilly conditions. If you ask me, that is what I call ideal running weather! The course at Sonoma Academy started our runners up a windy asphalt hill, where they then looped behind the school and back up the mountain side in plain view of the wildly thrilled crowd of parents and peers. At various checkpoints throughout the run, Sonoma Academy students greeted and guided each of the runners with words of encouragement and positive cheers. Once again, our Patriots completed the race tired but with smiles from ear to ear! Our parents lined the finish line with water and oranges in hand and plenty of high fives! At this time, I do not have the results, however, when the information is trickled down to me, our 5th graders will be the first to know! Thank you to the parents for their continued support -- driving to and from each meet and being our runners' biggest cheerleaders! It makes for such a positive energy surrounding each meet having each of you there! Until next time ...

Crossing Thin Ice - The Secrets of Influential Parenting (formerly called Shepherding Your Teen) is a life-transforming seminar for the parents of young people between 8 and 18 years old. Jeff Schadt, Founder and President of the Youth Transition Network, leads this conference. Jeff has done extensive research on what it takes to parent emotionally and spiritually healthy kids so parents can help them launch successfully and succeed for life on their own after high school. This conference will give parents the tools to open up communication and gain influence with their youth.
Crossing Thin Ice will be held at Hanna Boys Center, 17000 Arnold Drive, Sonoma on Friday, Nov. 4 from 6:30-9:30pm and Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9am-3pm. A box lunch is available for purchase on Saturday for $5.
