School Stanford-10 Results Announced

In May 2011, 100 Presentation School students in grades 3rd through 8th took the Stanford-10 tests. The results were slightly higher even than our exceptional 2010 results. For a school that does not, at this time, practice selective admissions, these scores are truly remarkable.
Our schoolwide average for Total Reading was the 82nd percentile, meaning that our students scored higher than 82% of all students taking the test nationwide. (Note that the Stanford-10 is the test of choice for private schools and top public schools nationwide). Our schoolwide average Total Math score was 88th percentile. The reading average is the same as last year and the Math climbed 6 points (though there were slight changes within each grade) from our 2010 scores.
16 of our students scored above the 95th percentile nationwide in both Total Reading and Total Math. 45 students (45% of our students tested!) scored in the 95th percentile or higher on either Total Reading or Total Math which qualifies them to participate in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Gifted Program (the leading non-profit gifted studies organization in the US). Information will be provided to those families about this optional enrichment program. Close to twice as many of our students scored in that top range in Math as in Reading (38 vs. 21).
If you have any further questions about your child's results or these school-wide results, please contact Nancy Waarich-Fischman.

Cross Country Beats The Heat In First Race

Despite grueling heat (which is an understatement) our Cross Country Team runners rocked their first Middle School Sports League Cross Country Meet. According to coach Amy Dougherty, "It was a sight to see each of them emerge from the vineyard over the beaten dirt path, bright red faces and eager for the finish line. Just when they thought they had nothing left inside to push them through the end, they hear our parents shouting words of encouragement and loud squeals from an over enthusiastic coach!"
More than 100 runners competed from six different area middle schools. Our roster included:
5th Graders Eva Bundschu Allison Cooley Audrey Hamilton Julia Little Dylan Rooney Jordan Salmonsen Olivia Teranchi Mikaela Zeiter 6th Graders Sophie Dierking Alexia Lema William Gear Genaro Pamatz Wriley Robles 7th Grade Janae Lewis
We had two ribbons won for second place -- congratulations to Alexia Lema in 6th and Mikaela Zeiter in 5th! And a HUGE thank you to all the parents that were able to drive and cheer our runners on during the race!
Our next meet is Tuesday, October 4 at Sonoma Academy. |

October a Busy Month for PA Speaker Series!
We are so fortunate to have TWO exciting speaker panels coming up quickly in the month of October, hosted by The Presentation School Parent's Association Speaker Series. We hope you can join us for one or both of these free programs.
On Monday, October 17th: "Best Practices in Education: What We Can Learn from America's Top Schools" 8:30am - 9:45am (Library) Speakers: David Ball & Raj Vinnakota This informal talk will encompass some of the best practices employed by our nation's most successful schools including curriculum trends, appropriate use of technology, how to recruit and nurture outstanding educators and how to foster in children a life-long love of learning. Raj and Dave were debate partners at Princeton. Twenty years later, they continue to collaborate by bringing their intellect and passion to solving the challenges posed by educating today's youth. That they do so from such different platforms ensures that their perspectives will be both interesting and relevant to all stakeholders in the great education discussion that will define our future. We hope that you will join us for a lively discussion and Q&A. David Ball is Principal of Milton Academy, a Wall Street Journal "Global Top 25" school. Raj Vinnakota is founder and Executive Director of SEED Academy, featured in "Waiting For Superman" as an example of America's best innovative public charter schools. To register: http://practicesineducation.eventbrite.com/ * * * * * * * * * * * On Wednesday, October 19th: "How To Cultivate the Love of Writing in Our Children" from 8:30am-9:45am (Library) New educational research reveals that writing is as fundamental to a child's development as reading. Writing is not only a key skill but also an essential part of self-discovery and critical to success later in life. But to think that writing comes naturally to everyone is simply not true. An abiding love of writing in children is developed with ongoing commitment and nurturing.
In her new book, "Your Child's Writing Life: How To Inspire Confidence, Creativity, and Skill At Every Age," Pam Allyn offers key steps and imaginative prompts to inspire and empower children to put their thoughts and ideas on paper.
Pam Allyn is the Executive Director and Founder of LitWorld, a global organization advocating for children's rights as readers, writers and learners. She is also the Executive Director and Founder of LitLife, a national organization dedicated to school improvement. She is the author of the acclaimed and award-winning "What To Read When: The Books and Stories To Read With Your Child--And All The Best Times To Read Them". Her most recent books are "Best Books for Boys: How To Engage Boys in Reading in Ways That Will Change Their Lives" and "Your Child's Writing Life."

Letter from Campus Kitchens, Our Lunch Providers
 From Ann & Tom Bassett:
Campus Kitchens is pleased to provide lunch for your children several days per week. We strive to maintain that balance between nutritional value, cost and insuring that your student will eat lunch. The lunch component of a student's day is critical to their growth and educational success.
Meals are created each day using fresh produce, breads and ingredients, Trans Fat has been completely eliminated from our preparation and we monitor sodium levels. Hot dogs & corn dogs are all beef, while our chicken strips are all chicken breast. Portion sizes are consistent with age appropriate guidelines.
We conform to the allergy guidelines provided by the school's administration and remain open to any new requirements that may come to our attention. In addition, we welcome any and all suggestions for future menu selections that maintain a reasonable cost profile and encourage students to eat during lunch.
Please direct any comments or concerns to your school administration or directly to us. We share in the health and nutrition of your children.

Our Students Are Loving This Great Weather!
Here our 4th graders enjoy a game created by Mr. Kuschner where the whole class is timed to see how quickly they can get a ball to pass through the legs of every student. The kids loved working together to try to beat their best time!
