New Middle School Electives Begin
Presentation continues to offer an exciting slate of Electives to its 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, enabling students to explore a topic or hobby outside of the regular curriculum. This trimester's Electives, which meet every Monday and Wednesday from 2:30-3:15pm, include Garden Innovators, School Newspaper, Technology, Student Council, Book Club, Yearbook and Basic French.
The Elective topics vary each year and students change their Elective three times a year. Most Electives are taught by school faculty, but parents are invited to propose an Elective topic at any time. Mrs. Carroll runs the program and she is happy to hear from parents interested in leading a class. Past topics taught by parents included Architecture, Marine Biology, Viticulture and more. |

3rd Grade Counting Challenge

One of the 3rd grade content standards for mathematics is understanding the place value of whole numbers, and counting, reading and writing numbers to 10,000. Third graders recently combined these concepts as they strengthened their number sense for the new school year.
Using base-ten blocks and a "computer" mat, the 3rd graders had to build numbers (constantly trading ones for tens, tens for hundreds, etc.) and then write them on a never-ending ticker tape. Ms. Caselli had quite a time trying to keep up with their demands for more ticker tape! The morning after they started, Ross Neles excitedly asked, "Will we get to build those numbers again today?" The students have already applied this knowledge to their study of expanded notation, comparing and ordering, and rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand.

New Middle School Challenge Day a Huge Success
This fall, for the first time, our middle school students participated in a Challenge Day developed by 6th grade teacher Tracy Walthard and overseen by the school's Student Council.

The school's 6th, 7th and 8th graders were divided into mixed-age teams which then competed in challenge stations that required them to work together to be successful. Stations like "The Swamp," "The Spider Web" and "Canyon Crossing" involved teamwork, physical prowess and problem solving. This is the first year that this afternoon program has been implemented and feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive.

On Friday, the Kindergarten class planted carrot seeds in the school garden for harvest in the fall. They are looking forward to their first fieldtrip to Green String Farm in Petaluma at the end of the month. As they walked away from the garden, you could hear them chanting, "Grow carrot seeds, grow!"

Important School Updates:
Perks: There is still room in most of the Perks classes that begin this week. Please email Gretchen Armer (garmer@presentationschool.com) in the library today to enroll. The complete list of offerings is on the school web site and flyers are available in the office and library.
Uniform Update: Please remember that only uniform sweaters and outerwear sold by Land's End and Classic Design may be worn at school. Just because a garment is burgundy, dark green or khaki in color, does not mean that it is approved for uniform wear.
Emergency Cards & Emergency Bags are Due! Please bring to your child's classroom no later than 9/23. Content list is in the School Handbook.
Volunteers Needed:
We are still in need of Aftercare volunteers on Tuesday and Wednesday. Aftercare is from 3:30-5:30 p.m. You will be trained by Miss Amy, our Aftercare Coordinator.
