FIRST MIDDLE SCHOOL DRAMA PRODUCTION
The Presentation School announces the fall production of the classic drama OUR TOWN by Thornton Wilder with limited engagement performances November 3-4, 2011.
A part of the canon of American Theatre, OUR TOWN holds a spot among works that have held up through time. The drama about two ordinary families living in adjacent houses in sleepy Grover's Corners, N.H. in the early years of the 20th century has been described by many as the Great American Play. The play details the everyday lives of those two families, the Gibbs and the Webbs. But underlying the events of their lives - marriages, births, and deaths - is a hope for something more, a transcendental experience unique to the human condition.
When the play was first written and performed, America was experiencing the aftershocks of the Great Depression and living under the impending shadow of World War II. Although uncertain times and fear characterized the time period, Wilder focuses the play on the facets of the human experience which testify to the strength and endurance of the human spirit. We find that the vice and virtue of a century ago isn't so different from that in our modern communities, and that the simple events of human life contain a rich tapestry of universal truths
Auditions for Own Town will take place during the week of August 29th. |
