Tip 1 Mother's Day Activity |
Fingerprinted lady bugs, flowers and sunshine make for a fabulous Mother's Day gift on child-made stationery. It's a personal "touch"! Draw lines or print them from computer, add a salutation and tap child's finger into colorful ink pad or paint onto the paper. A felt pen or crayon add final touches to their art.
Be sure to have kids write or dictate a meaningful message to mom before you put it in an envelope and make plenty of blank copies for mom to use as stationery herself! She'll love writing letters on this special gift!

Tip 2 Two Sided Felt Board |
A felt board (flannel board) is a great tool for language experience, which is a precursor to reading. Kids will sit and watch, almost spellbound, as a story unfolds in felt. An easy way to make a two sided board is to buy a large magnetic whiteboard and glue felt on the back. It is inexpensive and provides hours of fun education that allows use of either side, in a different manner!
"Outside in the Rain" poem above, is one of the first felt stories I made, over 20 years ago. Gluing fur and pipe cleaner to parts of the felt added interest! The poem reads like this: "Willie Duck and Wallie Duck played in an April Shower, without any rainboots on for almost an hour. Neither had a raincoat and neither had a hat, but their mother didn't worry or fret about that. Of course, their mother saw them, but she didn't scold. She didn't even tell them that they'd both catch cold. Now, Willie Duck and Wallie Duck were wet clear through. But, what about their mother? Well, she was out there, too!" If you would like a free copy of this story, lesson plan, and patterns for the felt pieces, email me your mailing address to carla@kidzreadingtips.com and I will gladly mail them free to you this week. Happy Mother's Day! |
Tip 3 Two Sided Magnetic Board |
This photo illustrates the other side of felt board from Tip 2. A dry erase pen or anything magnetic can be used to teach on this board. You can make your own magnetic pictures and words by cutting out items from magazines and gluing magnetic strips or drawing "childs own pictures" on hard stock paper with magnets attached.

This flat board stores easily in the closet or under the bed, provides 2 ways to teach and has "double the pleasure"! Young kids will get hours of creative learning.

"Teaching Reading IS Rocket Science."

KUDOS TO KINDNESS
Have you or your daughter ever been hurt by the words or actions of a "girl"? If the answer is yes, this and the fact Lauren Parsekian was bullied in middle school to the point of attempting suicide, is precisely why she founded an internationally recognized movement, documentary and school program based on KINDness in a girl's world.
After graduating from Pepperdine, she and her cofounder Molly Thompson took their Kind Campaign for girls on the road. When they ask the same question to auditorium's filled with girls, nearly every girl raised their hand. It is eye opening.
I urge you to go to her professional site www.kindcampaign.com
to learn how to help your daughter, class or school. She educates with a full range of kind cards, magazines, blogs, library, assembly & DVD assembly requests. Be sure to view the short trailer...'bout brings tears to your eyes.
Lauren went to high school in Laguna Niquel, CA with one of my college room mates, son. Thank you Shannon for sharing this story.
