No need to pay big bucks for musical cards!!  Kids can make their own!  Make one for a teacher, friend or grandparent.  The simple cards I made below have a 1 inch music button glued on front of card.  You can purchase these at some craft stores or I'd be happy to mail you what I have for a discounted price of $1.00, plus shipping!  Email me your need and I'll send them today!  carla@kidzreadingtips.com

Musical Valentine Card

I have 26 "Twinkle Star/ABC Song" and  8  "You are My Sunshine" music buttons left.   A fantastic site to view more card ideas is http://familyfun.go.com/valentines-day/valentines-daycards/best-valentines-day-cards-834796/view-all .  Also, stars and hearts go together nicely for Valentine's Day.  To learn about an excellent children's book, "The Story of the StarHearts",  view my friend and author,  Cheryl Russell's site  www.starheart.com from Laguna Beach!

 Tip 2          Contractions

Contractions are one of my favorite lessons to teach with a simple  blackboard, chalk, hands-on experience!  Contractions are two words put together with an apostrophe added to replace the omitted letters.

Make a column showing two words shortened by marking a big "X" through a letter or two that are replaced with an apostrophe.  Then show new contraction word on right.  Kids love making the "X" and replacing letters with an apostrophe.  It's a great visual and a feeling of power!

Tip 3      Reading Makes Sense

Sit with your child where you can both see the pictures and words of a book.  Take turns reading; this helps improve expression and gain confidence.  Criticism can be a deterrent to progress.  If child is stuck on a word,  a safe response is, " What do you think would make sense?" or "What is the beginning sound?"  If the child is still stuck, then  tell him the word, in order to preserve the meaning and thought of the sentence.

For example, if the passage reads "The boy went to the store to buy some cereal."  And your child reads it as, "The boy went to the store to buy some serious,"  he is not reading the passage with full comprehension, as it does not make "sense". Ask him what would make sense for the boy to buy at the store that starts with the soft c sound.  Reading should always make... sense!
