Tip 1       Behavior Charts - free

The countless times I have aimed to make positive changes with my students or son, I have incorporated CHARTS with stickers marking goals met each day.  This works for all sorts of positive behavior building;  potty training, chores, homework, spelling, healthy eating and exercise, which I have used for myself and even my mother!

Reading Chart

There is something about a colorful visual taped in full view on the fridge or bedroom door that keeps you reminded of a success you want to achieve, especially when there is a reward at the end!  This illustrated Reading Chart shows 1 month of daily reading practice.  I plan on dropping in the illustrated chart and stickers, free  with purchase of one of my personalized books below this month, too.

You may also download free printable charts for the family or classroom at http://superteacherworksheets.com/sticker-charts.html .  Improving reading one sticker at a time?   You Betcha!

 Tip 2   Decoding with Glass-Analysis

Glass-Analysis is a decoding program developed by Dr. Gerald and Dr. Esther Glass over 30 years ago.  It helps develop mastery of the sounding out of words.  I have used it successfully with 1st-6th graders ever since learning about it in my Master's Degree program.  Glass-Analysis extends through adult level words and aids students learning a second language.  It is not a phonics program, but a well thought out method of using whole words.  Intensive audile/visual training is given to identify common letter clusters such as et, ire, tion, within a word.  It offers crossword puzzle practice and books containing sentences with  words and clusters, from its correlated word kit.

Decoding w/ Glass Analysis

I found that Glass-Analysis worked especially well for students with Attention Deficit disorders.  It is succinct, fast paced and repetitive, taking as little as 15 minutes a day.  To learn more about sample dialogue of questioning used in a session, see sidebar "Glass-Analysis".  You can also view the offical site at www.glassanalysis.com .

READING QUOTE

"Resolve to edge in a little reading everyday, if it is but a single sentence.   If you gain 15 minutes a day, it will make itself felt at the end of the year."

Decoding with

Glass-Analysis cont.

Find a quiet place to sit across from student so he can see the word cards presented.  To learn the  "et"  sound, the following are the questions that are asked for the word "set".  Keep child's focus by working quickly.

In the word, "set", what letter makes the "sss" sound?  What letters make the "et" sound?  In the word, "set," what sound does the /s/ make?  What sound does e/t make?  If I took off the "sss" what sound would be left?  If I took off the e/t, what sound would I have left?  What is the whole word?   You'll be surprised at how the "et" clusters progress to  words like "letter", "forget" and "settlement".   If you have questions or would like a student tutored with Glass Analysis, email me at carla@carlareadingtips.com
