Tip 1         Pinata Reading Fun

Always one to fit learning into holidays, I got rave reviews from students with my homemade pumpkin pinatas each Halloween!  I filled them with reading items such as mini paper books, erasers, pencils, stickers, puzzles and candy.  Many items tied into what we were studying.  Halloween photos have flown out of bursting pinatas for "Story Starter" ideas.  Compound Words are what students picked up off the ground to immediately find their Compound Word partner.   Creativity is endless.

To make your own   spooky Halloween pumpkin pinata, go to www.ehow.com/how_6600253_make-create-pumpkin-pinata.html  If you like the smiling pumpkin in photo,  it  may be  purchased at www.birchangel.etsy.com from Joylyn in Hope, Idaho.  She has creative pinatas for every occasion!!

 Tip 2        Letter Sounding Song

Most of you have heard the clicky Campbell's Soup Song:  " mm mm good, mm mm good.  That's what Campbell soup is mm mm good!"  As a child it made me want to sing it over and over again.  So why not turn the song into letter sound learning?  Using each letter of the alphabet, the song goes like this for the letter "s":
   " ss    ss   ss,
   ss   ss   ss
That's what "s" sounds like,
 ss  ss  ss!"

A word of caution.  Be sure to "really"  isolate the letter sound and refrain from adding a vowel sound behind it such as ...  sa, se, si!

Tip 3      The Invaluable Grandparent

Recently, I was asked to write an article in   "The Wise Guide",  a  Northwest  Boomer and Senior Magazine.  I chose to write about grandparents and their invaluable roles with grandchildren, regarding learning . . . on many levels.

Grandparents are amazing resources in the lives of our children.  You can read the article in its entirety at www.thewiseguideonline.com .  Click on "Fall Edition" and scroll down to pages 14 and 15.  You'll find neat ideas to keep your little ones learning and occupied ... with grandparents!
