Greetings!

Just as the kids are headed  back to school, it is "National Book Festival Month".  How fitting is that?  See how to get a free poster and host your own book festival in Tip 3!  Also, I have a fantastic way to teach short vowels sounds in this issue. :)

Tip 1       Short Vowel Stick Men

In my first year teaching remedial reading, I discovered the difficulty many students have grasping "short vowel" sounds.  This challenge led me to devise a set of "Short Vowel Stick Men" for each student.  It was just the ticket to opening their eyes, ears and minds to learning these odd sounds!  It also made teaching them fun and a breeze!

The more modes used when teaching, the easier it is to learn new concepts.  Stick Men use visual, auditory and tactile modes.

a = achoo   e = edge (of ear)   i = itch   o = sound doctor tells you to say when he looks in mouth   u = uhh (Sound made when tapping head while thinking.)  Once students feel the part of their body each Stick Man describes, they have a constant reminder "on them", whenever sounding out words, as they can tap into their own body when needed, in the initial learning process of these pesky short vowel sounds.

If you would like a laminated set of short vowel stickmen, with instruction and activities, email me at carla@kidzreadingtips.com.  I have made a limited number of kits for $10 ea. (shipping is included)

 Tip 2          Reading Aloud

Reading aloud benefits babies in the womb to high school students and beyond.  While attending a favorite seminar, by Jim Trelease, I learned many savvy points.  Jim wrote the "Read-Aloud" handbook, that was a 17 week New York Times bestseller.  He emphasized that students are turned on to reading by those who advertise the product and read aloud 15-30 minutes a day.  Listening comprehension is approximately 3 years higher than reading level.  Hold the carrot out for kids to want to read.  Tell them the older they get, the better books get!  Other key notes follow:

  •    Make recordings of books for kids to read at home.
  •    Discussion after reading, promotes "thinking skills".
  •    Majority of top readers read comic books.  So can you!
  •    Best books to read aloud are ones making you gasp, laugh or cry.
  •    Create a tradition of telling ghost stories at Halloween and classic tales on holidays.
  •     When reading aloud with expression, you are giving of yourself.  This is the best gift you can give.  Use different voices for dialogue; interject comments and with fidgety young listeners, skip over long descriptive passages that slow the action.
Tip 3        National Book Festival

Whether you live in Washington DC or where you are sitting right now, you can celebrate in the 11th Annual "National Book Festival" the Library of Congress is sponsoring. The festival is free and open to the public Sept 24 and 25

Host your own Book Festival and download this original, authentic poster for this year at http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/  Here you will be given tips on how to take part in this annual celebration of books, authors and reading.  Celebrate the joys of reading in class and at home!
