Tip 1 Making Mini Books |
In grade school, I recall receiving a Maurice Sendak collection of mini books, no bigger than 4 x 3 inches, from a favorite aunt of mine. Today they are well worn and well read! Don't under estimate the little book that just might soar your child into a lifelong trip of reading. There's something intriguing about Tiny! So...let's make one!

Writing your own mini book can be just as fun for a child! All you need is paper, scissors, stapler or ring clips and an imagination. The Dollar Store even has mini books with blank pages to get creative. Young children can dictate a story to you and then they can illustrate it with stickers, stamps, crayons or watercolors. Older kids can write about their summer, animals or poetry. So, get BIG on small and have some mini book fun of your own this summer! |
Tip 2 Kid Library on a Budget |
If you want to place importance on reading with your children, make sure they have their own library, a place they can go to by themselves and pull a book out, anytime their hearts desire. Below is a photo of my son's library. This bookshelf has taken him from preschool to high school in what seems like a nano second! It always felt good when I
discovered him pulling books out to read when I wasn't in the room.
When I was a child, my library consisted of bricks with boards layed across them for shelves. It was on those shelves that my parents helped me collect hundreds of books. I've seen people use plastic and wooden crates for bookshelves. Get creative! Reasonably priced, gently used books are everywhere, too. Did you know that used book stores take trades of your adult or old children's books for a credit trade of any used children's book in the store? Conserve money, books and resources this way! Libraries often have used book sales. Call you local library and find out if they participate. And of course, ye old Garage Sale always has treasures and deals! Get started on building your library today! (See side bar for Sandpoint Budget Library...)
