Tip 1        Making a BIG Book!

"Miss Pennington and the Fox" was a BIG book I made about 5 first graders I was teaching, a fox and myself.  The book was (22"x 14") and the fact the children starred in the story, thrilled and inspired them to read the book over and over!  My part in illustrating, was simply tearing tissue and construction paper and glueing pieces in place. The pages are posterboard with 2 hole punches for the large rings to flip pages easily.

The students illustrated themselves with crayon, showing different emotions correlating with the 15 page story. The book lends itself to any number of characters, so is good for home or classroom.  I'd be happy to email you the full story if you write me at carla@kidzreadingtips.com

It was this very homemade BIG book, where I witnessed the enthusiasm students exuded reading about themselves and friends, that I decided to start my own "Personalized Children's Book" company, www.carlabooks.com.  Now I can make any child the star of a book and if it gets them excited about reading...I'm EXCITED to make it!

Tip 2      Father's Day Learning

Let's brainstorm about Dad!  He is so special to each of our families.  If you go to http://www.education.com/worksheets/fathers-day/ your kids can honor their father by making or writing any number of ideas on this site, such as "Favorite Things" to do with dad or drawing and writing about your own "SuperDad", as my son did below:

Or, if you are looking for an activity to do with dad this Father's Day, go to http://www.education.com/activity/fathers-day/ .  It gives dandy ideas to make Dad's Day super special this year!

Tip 3     Amazing Alphabet DVD

If you are working with preschool and 1st graders,  "The Amazing Alphabet Amusement Park" DVD, will get kids ready for a fun letter ride!  Besides teaching early reading skills, such as alphabet upper and lower case, rhyming and short vowel sounds, it has sing-along songs, Scout video and curriculum commentary for parents.

PLUS, if you are the FIRST person who happens to need a gift for a child and order one of my Personalized Children's Books below...YOU will receive this DVD free ! Yep, first one to order, I'll enclose the DVD, too. DVD may also be purchased at www.leapfrog.com for $14.98.

KUDOS TO KINDNESS

Last month, Jamie and Sean Gavin, from Mountain View Construction, donated one of my personalized books to every child at Kinderhaven!

Kinderhaven is our local shelter for children in crisis, with the need for a safe home. The expressions on the children's faces were priceless, as they grinned from ear to ear when they read their special name aloud in their book.

The kids were so surprised at the presents from the Gavin's. They showed their appreciation by giving us  a tour of their cool playground, bedrooms and facility. Kudos to the Gavin's for their thoughtful kindness!  Kudos to Kinderhaven for being the nurturer of these special children!
