Tip 1  Tachistoscope Reading

Can you say "tachistoscope"?  That's exactly what my homemade Robot Reader is, and kids will gobble up the words or letters you make to slide through your own Robot Reader!

To make a durable tachistoscope, use hard stock paper.  I used a file folder that I cut in half and drew a robot with markers.  Two 8 inch strips were stapled on the back to hold the "T" strip with words and I used an Exacto knife to cut the mouth.  Kids are thrilled to read what pops into the Robot's mouth, as they slide the words.  Be sure to make multiple blank "T" strips, so you're prepared for new words each week.  Hands-on reading activities like this one, really keep your young reader's attention!

Tip 2  Diagnostic Reading Assessment

Do you have a child who is struggling with reading and don't know why or what you can do to help?  One of the best investments you can make is to sign up for a  Diagnostic Reading Assessment.  A Certified Reading Specialist can determine what developmental skills a student has mastered and where they need instructional intervention.

After a private session testing visual memory, motor skills, auditory memory, auditory discrimination, comprehension, sight words and more, a report, explaining the results with corrective instruction is written.  A consultation with parents explains strengths and weaknesses, with suggestions offered. As a Certified Reading Specialist, I provide this service in the Sandpoint area.  See sidebar, "North West News" to learn how to help your child.

Tip 3  Leap Frog Map Raffle

Your name goes in a Raffle for a Leap Frog map game and Tag Pen worth $60 for every person you introduce to "Kidz Reading Tips" newsletter.  Yep, I'm trying to reach out and help others!  If you entered last month's contest, you are  already included for each name you sent me! Have you thought of others???  Read on to learn about this awesome educational game and how to have a chance at winning!

Parents love this Interactive & Talking Map because it teaches map skills and U.S. geography.  Kids love it because they can learn about other children from around the country, including what they eat and play.  The Tag Pen scans the map, enabling it to verbalize areas and items of interest to each state.  I just wonder why its Age Range is only 4-8, when I know that "I" could learn from it!!!
