Tip 1    Book in a Blanket

Cozy up with a "book in a blanket" with your children when March winds howl.  This nurturing snuggle is welcome at every age and the memories last a lifetime.  Decades later, I still visualize fondly, stormy nights in Canada cuddled snuggly in a blanket with grandparents, reading such books as "Teenie Weenie Neighbors" and "Father Goose".  Memories like these are invaluable and go a long way to the lifelong enjoyment of reading.

The photo above is of a whimsical, child-like, fleece blanket a girlfriend recently sent me, as a surprise.  To see how to make your own cuddly "no sew" reading blanket view side column!

Tip 2    St. Patrick's Day

The luck of the Blarney Stone just struck if you need St. Patrick's Day fun for Preschool - 8th grade!    Click:

Activities include:  coloring, cloze activities, reading comprehension, tracing, puppets, stationery, poetry, word scramble, homework passes, history and greeting cards ... All gold at the end of the rainbow!

Tip 3     Books and Babies

Studies show that the number of different words a baby hears each day is one of the most important predictors of later intelligence, social competence and school success, if those words come from one of baby's special people - mother, father, grandma, nanny - rather thanT.V.    Reading counts!

Babies benefit greatly when you read to them!  By showing the pictures, you are helping them develop their eye muscles and each time a word is heard by your child, it becomes imprinted more strongly in the brain.  This makes it easier to remember for when he/she is ready to start talking.  Each time babies hear, see or feel, this sends a message to the brain.  Eventually, the messages sent to the brain are strong enough to form skills and create a piece of knowledge.

To read a story properly, you need to be in a calm and cozy, relaxed environment.  Start with poetry, as the rhythmic beat is like a mothers heart.  Listening to "Mother Goose" or "Read Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young" can be soothing for a baby/toddler.  Check out how to make the "no sew" reading blanket in the side column and cozy up with a book, a blanket and a baby!
