Greetings!
It's a Red Letter Day coming up February 14. Tip 3 will prepare you with ideas for home or classroom... "Purposeful Valentines", along with free Valentines and a little house to store them in. ALSO, check out how 2 ladies in Northern Idaho facilitate and incentivize reading and learning.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Tip 1 Stuffed Animal Reading |
What's your child's favorite stuffed animal? Puppy? Kitten? Penguin? Studies show reading aloud to a stuffed animal provides practice, enjoyment and enhanced reading skills. Sure this is a creative idea for home, but imagine taking it to a full classroom!
That's exactly what Camy Popiel from Post Falls, Idaho did. She started "Learning with Lucky". Lucky is a cuddly stuffed puppy, provided to classrooms in multiples and is especially great for first graders. It is an incentive program designed to encourage reading, by earning rewards for time spent reading to Lucky. Schools using the program have reported a 35% increase in reading achievement.
Camy is looking for schools to adopt puppies, along with sponsors to keep puppies enthralling children with their non-judgemental patience and listening skills! If you are interested in knowing more about "Learning with Lucky", go to http://learningwithlucky.net/about.php |
Tip 2 I Before E Rule |
There are certain rules I remember learning as a child that I still use today. "I before E, except after C" is one of them. It's a mneumonic device that aids memory with a short rhyme. It means that, in words where i and e fall together, the order is ie, except directly following c, then it is ei. The chalkboard shows examples of each.

Of course, being the English language, there are always exceptions! That's when "except when said ay as in neighbor and weigh" comes into play and others that simply need to be memorized!

Tip 3 Purposeful Valentine's |
Bring the fun and quality of writing Valentine cards up a notch by adding more learning and thoughtfulness to this special day. First, if you go to http://www.apples4theteacher.com/coloringpages/valentines-day/ , you can print any number of cards - free. In the photo below, I chose the ones with the most "writing space".
Next, ask kids to think of each person they are giving a card to and what they like about that person and write it. "I like how you smile." "I like it when you share the jumprope." These Valentine's will be much more fun to receive, than signing a name to a generic card. Take advantage of every learning opportunity possible, including Valentine's Day!
If you would like one of these Valentine Dog Houses ... I have 5 extra to donate to the first 5 who order a "Personalized Book" below. Remember, on the first page I can print: "Happy Valentine's Day, I Love YOU!" |
Personalized Book of the Month |
Lost Dinosaur "This book is about ME!"
3-8 yrs Dinosaurs fascinate kids. A tour of a dinosaur museum with your child's name, city & friends throughout the book, makes it even more special! I can print "Happy Valentine's Day" from YOU on first page, too!
