January 2011

Greetings!

January is the perfect time to set goals for children of ALL ages.  It's called "New Year Resolutions" and is an excellent tradition to begin as a child.  Tip 3 will provide information on getting started.  The poem below, is a clicky motivator!

Good, better, best,
Never let it rest.
'Til your good is better,
and your better is best!
  Happy New Year!!!

Tip 1    My Word Book

Once a week, I asked students to tell me a special word they wanted to learn to read.  Kids whispered the word in my ear and I wrote it on one of the index cards in their "My Word Book".  On the back of the card they drew a picture of "their" special word.

Try this and you will be surprised at how readily children will learn to read words of "interest" to them...words as big and varied as Disneyland, Tyranasaurus Rex and hula hoop.  Before you know it, they will have a book full of words that they never imagined they could read.  Motivation and interest are powerful learning tools!

Tip 2   Label the Room

My teenage son thought I'd gone bonkers when he recently came home to find his bedroom "labeled". (purely for illustration purposes)  However, it quickly brought back memories of how I had done this in grade school to help him learn to read.

Once the labels on items in the room have been up for a week and read by you numerous times, it is fun to take them down and have your child read and tape them on the correct objects again.  Labeling the room was something I did in my classroom, as well.  It provided a constant visual of common words, for students to learn.

Tip 3   New Year Resolutions

Teach your child to set and reach goals while he or she is still young.  A New Year's resolution is the perfect example of a great goal setting opportunity. It is a promise you make to yourself.  There are different types of resolutions and children will need ideas of specific ones for their age. (personal, family, school, sports)  It is important to limit the number and keep them specific and simple.

The example above is one of many New Year's coloring sheets that you can make into resolution pages for your children to color and write some attainable goals.  You can print them at http://www.morecoloringpages.com/happy-new-year_coloring_pages.html   Offer suggestions if your child struggles to come up with their own ideas and be sure to provide your child with positive reinforcement through out  the year!
