             3 Tips for Busy  Parents!
Newsletter

November 2010

Greetings!

We teach our children at an early age to say "please" and "thank you" for all the appropriate reasons.  The art of learning to write or draw letters of appreciation can also be taught early on.  Thanksgiving is a special time to be reminded of this message.  In Tip 3, you will be treated to a new concept called "Thankyouology" that can be passed on to your family with amazing results!

Happy Thanksgiving and thank YOU for actively caring for the educaton of our youth!

Tip 1         Magic "e"

Three letter words with the vowel in the middle have a "short" vowel sound.  (mat, pet, kit...)  When an "e" is added to the end of a word, it is magic, as it makes the first vowel say its name. (mAte, PEte, kIte...)

These homemade flashcards are manipulatives students practice on their own. The Magic e is on the back side. Initially, child reads "mat", then bends flashcard forward so the Magic e appears and they read "mate".  Each time they see how the first vowel says its name and the Magic e is silent!  This activity helps students learn one of the rules of the english language in a "hands on" manner!

Tip 2    Salt Writing

Learning to write letters in a shallow container filled with salt is great practice for fine motor skills.  Sample letters should be placed next to box for child to copy.  Once he masters drawing letters with his fingers, give him an unsharpened pencil to practice holding correctly.

Asking him to say the sound of letter, while writing it, involves 3 senses ... sight, hearing and touch.  The more modalities used when learning the better!  Be sure to show how easy it is to erase work by shaking box gently back and forth.

Tip 3     Thankyouology

How many ways can you say "Thank You"?  By clicking on the following link, you will land in "Thankyouology".  My friend, Cheryl Russell from Laguna Beach, is the brainchild of this new concept.  Though much of the newsletter is written for adults, she also has sections for teachers and children that are very informative thank yous!  Click on the "Camp Thank You" sign at  www.thankyouology.com
