Kidz Reading Tips

             3 Tips for Busy  Parents!
Newsletter

October 2010

Greetings!

It's October and I am contemplating Halloween.  We had over 500 trick or treaters in our neighborhood last year.  Goblins received candy or a glow in the dark bracelet.  This year, I have "reading on my mind".  Perhaps, along with a treat, I will drop a note in each bag, informing parents how to receive free "Kidz Reading Tips".  If you care to give a treat that fosters reading this Halloween, see Tip 3.

Happy Halloween Reading!

Tip 1   b,d Reversals

When you are a child having difficulty remembering a "b" from a "d",  it's nice to have a helping hand.  Literally, it is the use of their own little hands, along with a "bed" card on the desk, that does the trick!  (Yellow is pillow.)

If you put your hands in two fists, as illustrated, the left hand forms a "b" and the right hand forms a "d".  Then, if you think of the word "bed", the "b" comes first and the "d" is last.  Look, it matches perfectly with the card.  When a child is shown this visual, he can apply it next time he stumbles over pesky words like baby, badge or bed!  This worked wonders in my classroom.

Tip 2  Comprehension - Maze

One way of boosting reading comprehension from first grade through high school, is using Maze passages.  Stories read silently, using the Maze technique, build comprehension.  It helps students construct meaning from context clues.

You can create your own be doing the following:
The first sentence is left intact, after that, every 7th word is replaced with three words in parenthese.  One is the actual word from the passage, one is a near distractor and the third is a word that sounds ridiculous.  I have also taken an old book or magazine and used white out for every 7th word to create the same effect.  Science based research has shown Maze reading provides a reliable and valid measure of reading comprehension when done in test form, too.

Tip 3  Halloween Bookmarks

Get kids in the Halloween and reading spirit at the same time, with these free colorful Halloween book marks!  It takes a few seconds to download, but you can print them by clicking on the following URL:

http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/pdfs/halloween-bookmarks.pdf

If they are laminated or glued onto construction paper, they will make a fun addition to your goblin's bags when they come to the door for a treat this Halloween.  Spread the love of reading one trick or treater at a time!

Forward to a Friend
I have taught K-3 remedial reading and 4-6 gifted students during my many years as a Reading Specialist.  It is always a thrill to see kids light up, as they grasp each new skill and learn the JOY of reading!  I believe that a young reader's success comes not only from teaching with enthusiasm, but the many "creative"
ways to bring reading into their lives.

These reading tips are
used with my own family and when volunteering at schools, too.  I now am excited to share them with YOU!

At the bottom of each issue is a "Personalized Book of the Month".  I have made these for many years.  Each child is the star of their own story.  Books are self-esteem building and written by educators.

Fundraising

This year has been an eventful launch of a new fundraising company called Loopah!  My husband, helped write the business plan when friends came up with this  exceptional fundraising concept, good for any non-profit organization.

Loopah will design you a FREE website or will add a link to an existing one with a "Shop to Support" button.  There are 1200 Online stores that supporters shop, with a percentage purchase going directly to the school or non profit organization.  This percentage is up to 26% of purchase, depending on store.

It's easy!  A no hassle, efficient fundraiser that earns money year round!  Loopah can have this up and running in a week at no charge.

As a person on the Board for a special fundraiser aiding children with Cancer in Sandpoint, Idaho...I'm excited to see them using Loopah to raise money to help our local kids.  If you go to their site:
www.jaceys-race.com  you will see "Shop" at the top and "Shop to Support" on the side.  When you click either of these, you will view the stores and how Loopah works.  There are Discounts, Free Shipping, and Deals for customers, too.   It's a Win-Win!

Call or email me with questions if you would like to learn more about how Loopah can help your favorite charity.

Along with friends, we have bought books, clothes, flights, car rentals, hotels, household needs and more...with a percentage helping charity. You can, too!
