Kidz Reading Tips

             3 Tips for Busy  Parents!
Newsletter

September 2010

Greetings!

The reading tips this month are some of my favorite and easiest.  There is even a "freebie" included today - so take advantage of it!  These are excellent ideas for September when the kids are going back to school.

If your school or favorite charity needs a "simple" way to raise money, email me!  I received many requests to do "Loopah" fundraising, mentioned in August. Loopah gives 100% back with their online Shopping Mall.   See details in side column under "Fundraising".

Tip 1   Write Favorite Team

I was Director of Fan Mail for ten years with the San Diego Chargers Football Team.  Every child who wrote a letter requesting a decal, sticker, autograph or team picture received something back in the mail.  What a great way to motivate children to learn to write, read and support their team at the same time!

Charger Letter

This week I spoke with the San Diego Chargers and Seattle Seahawks football team. They continue to respond to every young fan's letter.  If your child wants an "autograph" of a player, it's best to mail a self addressed stamped envelope to make it easier for the player.  Google any team to find addresses.  Go Team!   Get Writing!

Tip 2     Reading Marker

Whether reading in a group or on your own, many kids need a marker to keep their place.  I was fortunate to discover these yellow, see-thru markers early in my teaching career.  They not only intrique children, but help them track with their eyes and don't totally block out the text below.  This is important so they go from reading words to phrases and sentences quicker.

Reading Marker

To receive a free yellow reading marker, mail me a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) and I'd be happy to send you one!  Forward this to your teacher friends, too!  If more than one is needed, see below:

Tip 3  Record Child Reading

Would you like to "hear" reading improvement this year?  Recording your child read at the beginning and end of each school year is a perfect way to experience this.  Before recording, talk about reading with expression and fluency.  As they begin to read, help them through the words they don't know.

If you record your child a number of times through the year, they'll get continual, immediate feedback when listening to themselves.  What great practice! At the end of the year they'll be pleased to "hear" their improvement and growth from that first recording to the last... and so will you!  You can buy an Olympus pocket recorder from Amazon.com for under $30.

Forward to a Friend
As a Reading Specialist, I taught K-3 remedial reading and 4-6 gifted students.  It is a thrill to see kids light up, as they grasp each new skill and learn the JOY of reading!  I believe young reader's success comes not only from teaching with enthusiasm, but the many creative
ways to bring reading into their lives.

My reading tips are
used with our own family and when volunteering at schools, too.  I now am excited to share them with YOU!

At the bottom of issues is a hi-lited "Personalized  Book of the Month".  I have made these for many years.  Each child is the star of their own story.  Books are self-esteem building and written by educators.

Fundraising

This year has been an eventful launch of a new fundraising company called Loopah!  My husband, helped write the business plan when friends came up with this  exceptional fundraising concept, good for any non-profit organization.

Loopah will design you a FREE website or will add a link to an existing one with a "Shop to Support" button.  There are 1200 Online stores that when supporters shop, a percentage of each purchase goes directly to the school or non profit organization.  This percentage is up to 26% of purchase, depending on store.

It's easy!  A no hassle, efficient fundraiser that earns money year round!  Loopah can have this up and running in a week at no charge.

As a person on the Board for a special fundraiser aiding children with Cancer in Sandpoint, Idaho...I'm excited to see them using Loopah to raise money to help our local kids.  If you go to their site:
www.jaceys-race.com  you will see "Shop" at the top and "Shop to Support" on the side.  When you click either of these, you will view the stores and how Loopah works.  There are Discounts, Free Shipping, and Deals for customers, too.   It's a Win-Win!

Call or email me we with questions if you would like to learn more about how Loopah can help your favorite charity.
This is just 1 of 3 more concepts for raising money coming up in the near future.

Between my friends and I, we have already bought books, clothes, flights, car rentals, hotels, household needs and more...with a percentage helping charity.
