Kidz Reading Tips

             3 Tips for Busy  Parents!
Newsletter

August 2010

Greetings!

There is a huge need for "fundraising" in our schools.   I have been working behind the scenes with a new company in town, going nationwide, for over a year.   It takes the hassle out of fundraising. There is no cost...and they will even build a FREE website or link on an existing one.  If you know a school or ANY nonprofit organization in need of funds ...  continue reading over on side column.  It is such an easy way to earn!

In the meantime...stay COOL this summer and Happy Reading!

Tip 1   Musical Color Words

Come One!  Come All!  This reading game works for 1-30 kids.  Simply write the correct color on each construction paper.  Place them in a large circle and have kids begin walking around when the music starts.

When the music stops, children stand next to a color word and read it aloud.  Game progresses to color words on white paper or reading other words they are studying.  This is fun to play in the sunshine...if there is no breeze!

Tip 2 Magnetic Word Sentences

Grab your old magazines and let the kids have a word cutting hay day!   The larger and more colorful the words they cut, the better.

Once you have a pile of words, place them close together on a self-adhesive magnetic sheet. These can be purchased at most craft stores.  Cut each word out and  watch your child stick them to the refrigerator.  Kids get a kick out of designing their own colorful sentences.  I was surprised to see my own teenage son and friends get into this creative sentence making project, too!  Thanks to cousin Holly Pennington for reminding me of this smile-fest of a reading project!

Tip 3
   Who? What? Why?

When your child is working on comprehension, be sure to ask "W" word questions.  Questions starting with "W" as in, Who, What, Where, and Why, are "Open Ended" and require a full sentence response.

"Why did you like the book?"  "What did the rabbit do?"  This allows children to elaborate on what they read, as opposed to a "Close Ended" question that answers are "yes" or "no", such as  "Did" the rabbit go to the store?  W words are "wonderful" to remember to use when working on comprehension!

Forward to a Friend
As a Reading Specialist, I taught K-3 remedial reading and 4-6 gifted students.  It is a thrill to see kids light up, as they grasp each new skill and learn the JOY of reading!  I believe young reader's success comes not only from teaching with enthusiasm, but the many creative
ways to bring reading into their lives.

My reading tips are
used with ourown family and when volunteering at schools, too.  I now am excited to share them with YOU!

At the bottom  of issues will be a hi-lited "Personalized  Book of the Month".  I have made these for many years!  Each child is the star of their own story.  Books are self-esteem building and written by educators.

Fundraising

This year has been an eventful launch of a new fundraising company called Loopah!  My husband, helped write the business plan when friends came up with this  exceptional fundraising concept, good for any non-profit organization.

Loopah designs FREE websites or will add a link to an existing one with a "Shop to Support" button.  There are 1200 Online stores that when supporters shop, a percentage of each purchase goes directly to the school or non profit organization.  This percentage is up to 26% of purchase, depending on store.

It's easy!  A no hassle, efficient fundraiser that earns money year round!  Loopah can have this up and running in a week at no charge.

As a person on the Board for a special fundraiser aiding children with Cancer in Sandpoint...I'm excited to see them using Loopah to raise money to help our local kids.  If you go to their site:
www.jaceys-race.com  you will see "Shop" at the top and "Shop to Support" on the side.  When you click either of these, you will view the stores and how Loopah works.  There are Discounts, Free Shipping, and deals for customers, too.   It's a Win-Win!

Call or email me we with questions if you would like to learn more about how Loopah can help your favorite fundraiser.
This is just 1 of 3 more concepts for raising money coming up in the near future.

Between myself and friends, we have already bought books, clothes, flights, car rentals, hotels, household needs and more...
