Greetings!
School's out for SUMMER! There will be no brain drain this vacation if you make the local librarian your friend. She will aid in finding the "perfect" books for your child's interest and grade level. Then, how about starting a Book Club with specific dates for books to be read and share them with friends, using food as a theme? Ex: Gingerbread Man - serve gingerbread cookies !

Tip 1 Fishing for Words |
To generate excitement in reading this month take your child "fishing for words" at their own kitchen table! The theme for this fishing trip is "Father's Day".

Using construction paper, cut out fish and write words describing dad (big, kind, funny, smart). Next, slip a paper clip near the tail and throw them in a bowl. A fishing rod can be made with string tied to a stick and a small magnet super glued to the end of the string. As your child pulls fish out of the bowl and reads the words, she also can use each word in a sentence, describing dad. Now, let the magnetic fun begin!

Tip 2 Father's Day Card |
Homemade cards are always the best! It doesn't take more than some heartfelt words, scissors, glue, pen, construction paper and string to stay in the fishing theme for dad with this card.

Younger kids dictate what they'd like to say, while watching you print their words on the card. Older kids can write a poem or message using the adjectives and adverbs describing dad from Tip 1. Afterwards, let your child teach dad how to go "Fishing for Words", with good family time... all about him! Happy Father's Day!

Tip 3 Geography Travel Game |
Forgot to bring items to keep kiddos occupied on a long road trip? No problem. The Geography Game is a snap to learn and educational at the same time. Our family has played it with elementary school children through high school for years.
Simply say the name of a place -- such as a city, country, state or river and the next player responds by naming a place that begins with the letter that your place ended. For instance, if Player One says "Idaho", Player Two must choose a place that starts with "O", such as Oregon or Orlando. Play continues until your family has exhausted the world! Be prepared for lots of "a" words, since an inordinate number of places begin and end with this letter (Alberta, Antarica, Alaska, Argentina, Arizona).

As a Reading Specialist, I taught K-3 remedial reading and 4-6 gifted students. It is a thrill to see kids light up, as they grasp each new skill and learn the JOY of reading! I believe young reader's success comes not only from teaching with enthusiasm, but the many creative ways to bring reading into their lives.
My reading tips are
used with our own family and when volunteering at schools, too. I now am excited to share them with YOU!
At the bottom of issues will be a hi-lited "Personalized Book of the Month". I have made these for many years! Each child is the star of their own story. Books are self-esteem building and written by educators.
