| Tip 1 Car Wash Game |
Children love learning to read new words with the "Car Wash" game. All you need is a chalkboard, chalk and an eraser. Tell your child you would like him to help you clean the car by erasing the words you call out. In the example, "color words" have been used. The game may be altered to learn letters, prefixes, suffixes, blends, sight words or other lessons of the day.

| Tip 2 Sequencing Comics |
Learning to tell the order of a story is important for comprehension. Sequencing comics, cut from your newspaper, helps children learn what comes first, second, third or last in a series of colorful, simple cartoons.
In the example, I show how writing a number on the back of each comic tells the correct sequence. This makes it easy for your child to self-correct. The sequence activity can be adjusted for preschool - 6th grade, depending on the length and sophistication of comic. So, start reading the comic section of your newspaper and collect appropriate sequencing for your young readers! |
| Tip 3 Educational Easter Basket |

Kids of all ages are thrilled to get a basket each Easter. This year, instead of adding candy and toys, think about placing some interesting educational items.
This basket has a ruler, note pad, crayons, book covers, stickers, game book, post it notes, Cross and a book about Penguins. As a Reading Specialist, I taught K-3 remedial reading and 4-6 gifted students. It is a thrill to see kids light up, as they grasp each new skill and learn the JOY of reading! I believe young reader's success comes not only from teaching with enthusiasm, but the many creative
ways to bring reading into their lives.
