Tip 1   Word Families

When teaching word families, learning to read patterns is important.  Children recognize word patterns as opposed to sounding out words.  When a child knows the word "cat", the pattern to teach then is mat, rat, sat.  Over emphasis on phonics will result in 'cu' 'a' 'tuh'.  This is why it's important to teach patterns through word families - rhyming words.  Once the "short a" sounds are learned, do the same with e, i, o and u words.  I like to make a visual for students with houses these "word families" live in!
Tip 2   Echo Reading

This works, as it sounds - child "echoes" the sentence you just read to them, when you have finished.  So, you set the example by smooth, expressive reading while the child follows the text with his eyes in his book.  Then he re-reads (echoes) the same sentence back with same fluency and expression that you used.  This can be done sharing a book with a child or with a group of children who each have the same book.

It is one of the simplest and most effective approaches to develop fluency, reading with expression, expand vocabulary and increase reading achievement for K- 4gr.
  • Children learn they can read as dramatically as they speak.
  • A study has shown with 2.5 months of intensive practice, echo reading produced a 7 month gain in reading skills.
Tip 3   Easter Egg Game

Holidays are the perfect time to make reading fun!  Using plastic eggs that open, you can write a word and place one in each egg.  Fill a basket with "egg words" and take turns pulling out an egg and reading the word.  Whoever has the most "egg words" in the end, is the winner.  This can be adapted to teach picture words, letters, phrases and sentences.
