CO VETERINARY MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS DEPLOYED FOR FOUR MILE CANYON FIRE IN BOULDER COUNTY
Cherie France and Cosmo at the CO VMRC Shelter
CO VMRC Shelter
From September 7th-12th, over 20 members of the CO VMRC managed the shelter and supply distributions at the Boulder YMCA. Co-located with the Red Cross shelter, animals and their owners were provided with overnight and day sheltering, pet supplies, and information and referral services. At least 150 contacts were made with victims of the blaze. Supplies and sheltering equipment were provided by the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.

This response provided the CO VMRC with an opportunity to utilize its deployment and operational systems. In the coming weeks, the unit will identify actions for improving its capacity to respond during disasters.
ANIMAL HANDLING CLASS
October 17th, 9:00-4:00
When animals are not in a controlled environment, they will likely be stressed and not behave as they would in a veterinary office or boarding kennel.

Lori Swenson will teach how to use tools for capture and restraint that may not be familiar to most veterinary professionals.  Participants will have the opportunity to try their new skills on live animals.

Lunch will be served. There is no cost to participate.

Please contact Deborah if you wish to attend.

MOBILE UNIT DONATED TO CVMF

From left to right: TJ Maxfield, Regional Operations Director, VCA Animal Hospitals; Ralph Johnson, Executive Director, CVMF; Sharon Kay Brown, Director of Development, CVMF; and Brandon Antin, Special Projects Coordinator, VCA ANTECH.

Mobile Clinic

The Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation (CVMF) has received a mobile unit from VCA Charities. This unit will be available to the CO VMRC for animal emergency response.

In the coming weeks, protocols for use of the clinic will be developed and shared with the members of the CO VMRC. This is an exciting development and elevates our capacity to provide veterinary services during a deployment.

The first chance for unit members to view the clinic will be at our October 17th training.
CO VMRC PROVIDES SUPPORT TO 50 CANINE TEAMS
Canine Seach ExerciseIn late May, 15 members of the Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps provided support to 50 canine search and rescue teams that came to Denver for certification.

Held at the Denver International Airport's "rubble pile", members provided preliminary canine assessment, stabilization care for any injured canine, and further treatment recommendations. This exercise provided an opportunity for members to set up field treatment, become familiar with the medical cache, and to participate in a "real world" scenario.

As a result, CO VMRC and CO-TF1 (Colorado Task Force One), the home of Colorado's canine urban search and rescue teams, are developing a partnership for CO VMRC members to provide deployment exams and field support for these working canines.
SEVEN MEMBERS ATTEND ANNUAL VOLUNTEER CAPACITY WORKSHOP
Seven members of the CO VMRC attended the Deb Colburn
annual Volunteer Capacity Building Workshop in Breckenridge on August 27th. The Workshop provided a variety of classes on emergency preparedness and response and conducted a table-top exercise.

Unit Coordinator, Deborah Colburn, hosted two classes: Veterinary Professionals in the MRC and CART for CERT.

Representing the CO VMRC were Dr. Heather Becker, Dr. Susan Muench, Cherie France, Pam Gripp, Carla Zinanti, and Susan Link.
SPECIAL PROJECT FUNDING AWARDED
Med Bag CO VMRCThe CO VMRC has been awarded special project funding from CDPHE (Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment) that will support enhancement of unit operations. To date, we have purchased a new laptop and printer (for use in the field), med bags, emergency vests, whistles, radio batteries, updated medications for our caches, a unit banner, long and short sleeve unit shirts, and unit caps.

Funding also supported seven members attending the Volunteer Capacity Building Workshop in Breckenridge and will provide scholarships for members to attend training at the CVMA Convention 2010.

Planning has begun for our concentrated efforts to recruit new CO VMRC members from the Western Slope. We wish to thank Koral O'Brien, Colorado MRC Coordinator, for this critical funding.
