Third Year of Summer Leadership Program Best Yet

August 13th will mark the final day of the 2010 HRCS Summer Leadership Program.  Nearly one hundred students representing  twenty five different schools from all five boroughs will have received life-changing experiences and a full week of leadership training as part of the six week program.  This year marks the first time that the program has been run as an open enrollment program with participants being recruited from the many partner schools of HRCS from around the city.  Students in the program spend the week developing their leadership, teamwork, and communication skills using sailing as a learning tool.  The week is capped off by a sail down to the Statue of Liberty on Thursday and a Sailing Olympics on Friday.  Many students also earn much-needed physical education credits by participating in the program. More information on the program can be found on our website.  Become a fan of HRCS on Facebook to see videos and pictures from the program.
Intern of the Month: Calvin Williams

Calvin is a rising eleventh grade student.  He completed the Accredited After School Program in June of 2010.  He then joined the Summer Internship Program and is paid a stipend to shadow the HRCS sailing instructors for the six weeks of the Summer Leadership Program.  In addition to hours each week of individualized sailing instruction for the interns, an HRCS volunteer member takes the Summer Interns sailing in the membership regattas each Thursday evening for the entire summer, allowing the interns to compete as a crew against seasoned adult sailors.

In the fall, Calvin will continue to be with HRCS on a year-round basis through the Captain Internship Program.  He will earn additional academic credits while peer mentoring new students enrolled at HRCS in the Accredited After School Program and the Accredited Boat Building Program.  He will work closely with HRCS staff and volunteers from the Columbia University and Fordham University sailing teams, receiving ongoing supervision, counseling, tutoring for all of his classes, as well as preparation for the college application process which will include college visits throughout this school year.  He will also be exposed to applying to private secondary schools that have sailing teams as either a transfer or post-graduate student in order to create the optimal opportunities for college acceptance.  Calvin will be supported in pursuing his U.S. Coast Guard Captain's license when he turns eighteen, and he will be recruited to work as a summer sailing instructor at HRCS during his college years.  HRCS will serve as an employment and personal reference for Calvin throughout his young adult life.

In Calvin's own words, "My experience at Hudson River Community Sailing is extraordinary.  Doing the Summer Internship, I have been able to teach other kids what I know.  I hope to continue sailing in the future while I get my life set."

Sadie Nash Leaders Set Sail with HRCS

Leaders from Sadie Nash Leadership Project
Sadie Nash Leaders

On Friday July 9th, 11 lucky young women from the Sadie Nash Leadership Project Summer Institute got the unique opportunity to go sailing for an afternoon with Hudson River Community Sailing.  The outing was one of six that occur every Friday during the six-week program.  According to the girls, it was the best one yet.  The sail was used as a real-life application for leadership and teamwork skills and the girls excelled on the boats even though it was their first time sailing.  Sadie Nash Leadership Project is dedicated to promoting leadership and activism among young women.  The program, founded in 2001, is designed to strengthen, empower, and equip young women as agents for change in their lives and in the world.

Press Taking Note of HRCS

HRCS' exciting programs have started to attract some interest from the local press outlets.  NY1 filmed a series of short pieces detailing the youth and adult programs on August 6th.  Roger Clark, the reporter, spent the morning sailing with two HRCS instructors and later, the summer interns.  The article and video can be seen here.  Fox News' Good Day New York profiled the Summer Leadership Program on Wednesday, July 7th.  The video can be seen here.  DNAinfo.com, a Manhattan news website, did a very focused piece on the HRCS youth programs on July 22nd.  That article, with pictures, can be seen here
HRCS Hosts a Myriad of Corporate Sails
