Spring After School Program Ends on High Note

On June 8th, 32 New York City public high school students representing three different high schools joined the HRCS family as graduates of the nationally-recognized Accredited After School Program (AASP). This spring program represented the largest class of AASP graduates to date and was the first to include Landmark High School, the most recent partner-school of HRCS. The Accredited After School Program uses sailing as a learning tool to help underprivileged high school students become more interested in, and better at, math. More information on the program can be found on our website. Become a fan of HRCS on Facebook to see videos and pictures from the program.

Over 500 Turn Out to "Rock the Dock" for HRCS

Considering the record of the past two HRCS fundraisers, all those involved with this years event were praying to their own weather gods for warm weather and sunny skies...and their prayers were answered! Over five hundred friends and supporters of HRCS were greeted with a gorgeous evening to show their support and have a great time. Dark 'n Stormy's, the events signature drink, were flowing from the sky and everyone was boogeying down to the sounds of Smooth Kentucky and, later on in the evening, DJ C. HRCS would like to give special thanks to Pier 66 Maritime, our event chairs and our amazing host committee, our sponsors; Castle Brands, Heineken, Svedka, Izze Soda, Millbrook Vineyards and Winery, and the vineyards of Ribero del Duero, Spain and the generous contributors to our luxury raffle for their product sponsors; Smooth Kentucky and DJ C for keeping our toes tapping all night long; and all those who came, thank you for your support. Kids from Camp Amerikids Learn to Sail with HRCS
On Saturday, June 19th, 15 kids from the Camp Amerikids Leader-in-Training program got the unique opportunity to go sailing for a morning with Hudson River Community Sailing. Camp Amerikids is dedicated to enhancing the lives of youth in the
Tri-State Area who are infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS by
providing a traditional summer camp experience, year-round skill
building and a supported transition into adulthood. The Leader-in-Training program provides former Camp Amerikids campers ages 15-17 the opportunity to take a leadership role in camp. The sail with HRCS is part of a series of monthly team-building trips that the Leaders-in-Training take with volunteer mentors in and around New York City. HRCS is excited to partner with an amazing organization like Camp Amerikids in the future to provide other great opportunities for children living with HIV/AIDS. Back to Top

Student Boat Builders Launch Homemade Boat From HRCS
Credit: Brooklyn Boatworks |
On June 16th, 14 students from Brooklyn Boatworks launched their homemade Optimist dinghy from the dock at HRCS. The students had been building the boat, which began as three sheets of plywood, for the past six months. After the launch, the students enjoyed an exciting sail on the Hudson River on three of HRCS' J-24s. HRCS was excited to partner with Brooklyn Boatworks for this launch and we hope to begin a boat building program of our own beginning as early as this winter. Back to Top |
