Youth Programs Kick Off 2010 Season

The start of the Accredited After School Program on April 12th marked the unofficial beginning of the 2010 sailing season! Forty high school students from three local high schools in Chelsea have been selected to be part of this nationally recognized program. The Accredited After School Program uses sailing as a learning tool to make underprivileged high school students more interested in, and better at, math. More information on the program can be found on our website. Students spend the first two weeks of this ten-week program learning the basics of sailing and the interconnectedness of math and sailing. Become a fan of HRCS on Facebook to see daily pictures of the program and find out exactly what the students are learning.

HRCS Partners with Columbia University's Physical Education Program
HRCS has recently partnered with Columbia University's Physical
Education Program to offer sailing physical education classes for
Columbia University students. The
partnership began this
Spring with the goal of giving Columbia students better access to
sailing education at a convenient location to the campus. Columbia has a
long tradition of sailing at the collegiate racing level but has been
struggling in recent years to recruit strong sailors. Using this
physical education, learn-to-sail program, Columbia's sailing team hopes
to build out a stronger racing program from within its current student
body. Columbia's current sailing facility is on City Island in the
Bronx where they have a small fleet of two-person dinghies. Physical
education is required for all Columbia students and despite the
University having a small-boat sailing facility, sailing is not
currently offered as a physical education course. As part of this
course, students will meet at the HRCS boat house for 18 hours of
on-the-water sailing education spread over a series of Fridays. Students will begin with the basics of boathandling and sail trim and
work up to advanced maneuvers and racing basics. HRCS is excited for
the future potential of a partnership with Columbia's Physical Education
Program and we hope to become more involved with their collegiate
racing program. Back to Top
